Purchasing Extra Tulle

Jeana, on April 30, 2019 at 3:17 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 6

My dress is a lace top ballgown with tulle skirt. The top layer of the skirt is tulle with some lace which I am going to have removed in alterations. I want to replace it with layer of plain tulle and I need 14 yards. To order the matching tulle from the same designer is $60 a yard which means I'll end up paying 1/3 of the original price of the dress to add 1 layer of tulle. That seems ridiculous to me. The bridal shop also suggested an alternative designer's tulle at $16 a yard. I'm going to go into the store to compare the two before deciding.

Has anyone out there purchased additional fabric from someone other than their dress designer? How did that work out for you? Should I suck it up and spend the $800 (its not gonna break the bank, but it goes against my sense of practicality as its a dress I'll wear once)? Any other suggestions?

Wow $800 is ridiculous for one layer of tulle! If the salon where you will be doing alterations is confident you can use $16 tulle instead & that it will match your dress color & texture (thickness, stiffness, draping) I I would go with that. I don’t know how your dress looks like, but since you said it’s a ball gown, I assume it has many layers of tulle. If that’s the case, could you just remove top layer & not replace it at all?

Lord, don't do it. There's definitely an alternate that will match. If you have an alterations person besides the salon, ask them if they have a source. Good ones keep fabric like that in stock already.

Added a pic of my dress. I sure I could go without it but I like the poof and I want all the poof I can reasonably get. Tho I’m not convinced it would make $800 worth happier!

Your dress looks great on you!
If it’s about poof, would a petticoat under the dress work? It will give you all the poof for only $20 or so lol. Amazon has all different styles.
