Punta Cana Honeymoon: Breathless or Excellence?

I have heard nothing but excellent reviews about Excellence hotels. Lol

My Aunt and her H's family went to Breathless in January. They said it was nice, but loud. Also they had 2 separate people from their group almost get hit by the tiles in the bathroom falling off the wall. I found that bizarre. This was 2 different bathrooms, they got new rooms at least. I guess the tiles were really heavy and almost hit both of them.

That is all I remember from their time there haha

We stayed at Excellence Playa Mujeres and loved it. I honestly can't think of anything negative to say about the resort. I'm sure Excellence in DR is just as fabulous.

@Kathryn- that is a little scary about the bathroom tiles!

@kristenann- I don't know if you happen to be a wine drinker but if you are do you feel Excellence had a good selection?

I drink anything except beer. When I did have wine, I was pleased with their selection of white. (not a red wine fan). They also had very good mixed drinks.

We stayed at excellence and it was awesome. Do the excellence club upgrade. I don't remember having a huge red wine selection but what they served was good.

Only con: our room had a window from the bed to the bathroom. So. Weird. It was fine though!

I stayed at Breathless for a friends wedding in December....the rooms were so humid to the point that everything felt damp to the touch until the AC kicked in...and there was a mildewy smell throughout :-/ . A lot of people in the party experienced the smell and humidity in their rooms too. Seems like they have a few maintenance issues so I can believe the tile hitting someone lol! It was just ok for a friends trip for a long weekend. It's about a 45 min drive from the airport and there's absolutely nothing around the resort.

We really considered Breathless...in fact, we almost booked it! The reviews online were mixed but it sounded like a resort we would like. Then our travel agent called me and said he just had a client get back from Breathless with big concerns. He forwarded me the email and there were some major red flags, including food poisoning. He said this client travels through him all the time and really has never complained before so it raised a big red flag for him. He said he has sent 6 clients to Breathless Punta Cana and 5 came back with complaints. We decided to book elsewhere and not take our chances!

Also can anyone recommend a particular room type at either?

We are doing excellence playa mujeres for our honeymoon! Hoping to book the excellence club ocean view roof top terrace! If you book for 7 days, and do the excellence upgrade, and bring a copy of your marriage license, you get a free honeymoon package which includes champagne upon arrival, champagne breakfast in bed, fresh floral arrangements, special treats, a spa package, a rose petal bath, a private on beach dinner, and some other perks! My fh has been borderline obsessed with researching honeymoon spots and this is the best we've found! Check out their roof top terrace on YouTube. Just amazing!!!

We did the Excellence Club Jr Swim Up Suite and didn't think it was worth it. All that really meant was we were ground level facing the pool. It was fine, but you had to walk back around to your door to get back in your room, as you couldn't open the sliding door from the outside at all, but would have been equally fine with another room type. The Excellence Club is what we really took advantage of. You get a private check in where you can snack and have drinks while you wait, snacks/drinks in the club all day, concierge service, they clean the room 2x a day, you can have whatever you want at the in room bar...it was awesome. You also have a private beach area - though we spent most of our time at the pool.
