Puerto Rican and Irish wedding

Teresa, on April 2, 2016 at 11:16 PM Posted in Planning 0 15

I'm Puerto Rican and my FH is Irish (pretty common combo in NYC). I would like to incorporate my culture in the wedding and to us that's the FOOD. The venue we picked has a pretty diverse menu in general but especially for the cocktail hour. they have shepherds pie and things that reflect Irish and Italian cuisine however the "Spanish" food they have is more Mexican style. no problem here with Mexican food I eat it regularly I would just prefer and I'm sure the other 75 Puerto Ricans attending would prefer our style of food. They don't expect it but I think it would be a real treat. So I am planning on talking to my venue about it see if they can make accommodations if not I would like to hire a second caterer for an additional table during cocktail hour with all of our treats. This wouldn't be made at home but would this be considered tacky?! My FH thinks I'm going overboard and giving myself more work than necessary.. am I?

You probably are giving yourself more work. But it's your wedding and if you have the money for a second caterer, do it. It'll make you happy.

ETA: my FH is Puerto Rican and I'm Italian. Not sure how our menu is going to work, we can barely find a venue lol

Boricua here too! So my sister had a caterer that did American food and it was delicious. But she also wanted to incorporate our culture via music and food. So she hired another professional to serve bowls of arroz con guandules. The caterer agreed and everyone loved the touch. It helped that it was a pro.

@Lauren17 how are you incorporating? I was just thinking like mini versions of our fried faves...

Would it be rude to ask the caterers at our venue if they can't make the food can we bring outside food in?? They're really nice. I don't want to offend anyone especially people that can really make our big day.

I love that idea @Delisa R. Boricuas love their arroz con gandules. I think I'm going to make my FH do the Puerto Rican Waltz with me as our first dance. I didn't even know this was a thing but I love it.

I'm Puerto Rican and Cuban (woot woot) and I'm thinking about doing this for my rehearsal dinner. I found a gourmet food truck that specializes in Cuban cuisine. What if you did this for your rehearsal instead? Or what about a 'late night snack' and have it be Puerto Rican treats?

@futuremarinewifexo that's a great combo. you're going to have amazing looking bambinos lol and yeah good luck planning your menu. Italians and Puerto Ricans are equally as passionate about their food.

I love Puerto Rican food. My youngest brother is Puerto Rican. I can make a banging "arroz con guandules"

(My brother request it at every family event).

I think it's extra work but if it's important to you and you can afford it - Go For It!!!

I'm specifically trying to avoid Colombian food for my wedding in Colombia (not easy). But I want to give my guests a bit of local flavor so we are having some Colombian food at our cocktail hour. If it were me, I wouldn't necessarily like to relegate the PR flavor to a rehearsal dinner since I would want all my guests to experience it.

    Good luck!

Thank you @m&m I'm going to look into the late night snack. I'm loving your food truck idea that sounds like a lot of fun. but we def can't afford that.

I am also looking for mini pilons that aren't $10 a piece to paint a shamrock on with our initials and the wedding date. It's insane how you find them all over PR as a souvenir but can't find them online at all.

Aw thanks Teresa! And I know lol! That's why I think we'll stick with a BBQ style. That way no one gets hurt lol

Read the contract from your main caterer. They may not allow other food to be brought in because of liability. If someone gets food poisoning, which caterer would be sued?
