Psa: Wedding Wire reviews may be overstated

Carleigh, on February 26, 2021 at 8:05 PM Posted in Account Support 1 21
I won’t be surprised if this is removed, however I just found out (based on a disputed review of mine) that apparently you can only review vendors that you end up actually booking. I had a bad experience with communication with a caterer. I obviously didn’t book them because of this. Their professionalism was truly appalling as in they straight up ignored multiple emails of mine for months on end yet they have 4.9 stars on here. So I left a review stating my experience so that others would be aware of this and it was removed because I didn’t book them. Given what happened I would imagine I’m not the only customer who had this problem with this vendor so I highly doubt their 4.9 stars is legitimate or valid.

That’s all just to say, maybe don’t rely on vendor reviews here and cross check with other sources! I think the reviews here may be a bit overstated because of cases like mine.

I saw several threads where couples wrote negative reviews of vendors they actually used and they were removed at the request of the vendor for being under 5 stars.

Yelp and GoogleMaps do not do this. It's a great place to start looking but don't rely on WW at all for transparency.

That's interesting. I've also noticed that the average price for vendors is way off. One of the florists I've looked at, it said their average price on Wedding Wire was $4,000. Then when they reached out they said their minimum was $8,000 and I was quoted at $16,000. I didn't ask for anything out of the ordinary either. It's crazy!

Yeah I think the point of the policy is to prevent people from writing fake reviews which I get. But I also think that refusing reviews from ppl who ended up not booking results in overstated reviews that are misleading. Just my opinion but I feel like if you can provide evidence that you talked to a vendor/had an issue the review should stand.

Yes absolutely! They remove bad comments even if you do book with them. Wedding wire is such a joke. I just like the forums here because it actually helps people. But yes even then they’re just more scammers like the entire wedding industry. I’m sure this will get deleted

That is crazy! I haven't looked for vendors on wedding wire. I look on my own, because I don't know about wedding wire but some wedding apps benefit off of people going through there app to locate vendors. I look for my own vendors on my own. The prices that I received from my caturer was depending on buffet style or plated dinner. Plated dinner ootions started at $25.00 per person and included water, Ice tea,& punch. That included a dinner consisting of celantro chicken w/almond rice and a vegetable melody, also with Ceasar salad.
Or anyone of the. Chicken dinners, meatloaf, pulled pork or beaf brisket meals. Alls meals served with bread of your choice. The prices went up to $35.00 per person on seafood dinners and 45.00 per person on stake dinners. Buffet style is alittle different you purchase according to what you will have on you buffet. It is priced by based o. How many people you will feed. Even on buffet style with everything that I want I'm around about 20.00 per person for 200 guest. Which put me at $4000.00 but it cold be less if I change a few things. I cant get down to about 2,500.00 and still have a great menu. Just shop around. If they can't give you a complete break down then dont use them.

I wrote a negative review on WeddingWire AND on Google of my venue that we actually did use. Both were removed for an unknown reason. They have all 5 star reviews so anyone who looks them up is going to think they’re great, like I did when I booked them. It’s really upsetting because I’m sure there were other negative reviews that would’ve stopped me from booking with them to begin with, but they were removed too. And I wanted to try to help other people know what they’re in for with my review, but...

That’s unfortunate! But, I’m not surprised. I’m sure positive reviews keep the vendors paying for their advertising on WW. What’s actually surprising is that they haven’t taken this post down. I see the WW rep comment on certain posts, so maybe she’ll post here and explain. But WW has been of zero use toward my wedding. It’s really only best for scrolling through the forums as a wedding planning pastime, especially during the pandemic since Cali’s been closed for so long and there’s nothing else to do. 😫

Since these forms are for sharing information.... Who was the catering company?

I love the WW forums for advice, ideas, and comments, but I would never book a vendor off WW. From what I've heard, most of the negative reviews seem to mysteriously get taken down from WW...

Funny you mention that, I came here to say this is 100% true.

When I got married many moons ago, I left my florist a negative review here on Wedding Wire. For the record, it wasn't even a one-star - I gave them a three-star review because about a third of my flowers were dead or dying and the cake flowers were the completely wrong species, but the arrangements themselves were designed how I had wanted them, and they didn't charge me for the incorrect cake flowers. I felt three stars was plenty fair.

About a year and a half later, I received an email from WW saying my review was removed because the florist claimed I had never used their service. I was told that to put my review back up, I would need to show WW a receipt or contract to prove I had used them. Remember, this was a year and a half later - who keeps their wedding contracts or receipts that long? Seemed more like an easy way to guarantee they could remove my review and I wouldn't be able to rightfully dispute, because they were banking on the fact most people would have disposed of those contracts/receipts by then.

I will use WW to find prospective vendors, but I will heavily research them myself outside of WW for exactly this reason.

Yup... wedding wire is not transparent at all. Everyone has 5 star reviews for a reason...

I was always skeptical of the reviews on here. How could every vendor have 5 stars? It's a good resource to find them but we have to check other sources for reviews and most of all trust our instincts when meeting with vendors for the first time.

It has always seemed fishy to me how nearly all reviews on Wedding Wire have 5 stars, whereas many of the same exact vendors have other ratings on sites such as the Knot. I think the point is, don't book anything solely based on Wedding Wire reviews. Do your research!

So I'm probably one of the few people who do this but I keep all contracts and large money receipts for an long as I have to hold onto my taxes and them some. You always wanna hold onto contracts and receipts till after the status of limitation of being taken to court for failure to pay or sent to a collection agency. At least florist just claimed you didn't use your service, not that you didn't pay. Could be worse.

And I always recommend when looking up venders to look though many websites as not all reviews are on the same site aways.

Great PSA! Definitely cross check with other reviews and resources (and if you end up really liking your vendors be sure to leave them reviews elsewhere as well).

We ended up having a Covid mini-elopement and used our venue and photographer for that but none of our other vendors. If I leave them a review now, based on that experience, then I won't be able to review them again if we ever do our full event we planned. We also ended up using a different florist (my coworkers got me a gift certificate and I just had a bouquet made but kept our deposit for our original florist for our redo event if it ever happens), so I can't review the florist who did my elopement bouquet (because I didn't officially "book" her) and then still be able to review our primary florist for our big event. So WW reviews certainly have limitations.

This was almost 15 years ago now, so it's a moot point. And they also never tried to claim to any real authority that I didn't use their service - just Wedding Wire, to force my review to be taken down. I'm not really concerned about "could be worse." My point was to the topic of the thread - that WW will take down unflattering reviews, and use something like "you can't prove you used them" to justify their lack of transparency.

If it really got to that point, I could have simply gone to my bank, where I can access statements going back five years. And I probably could have done that here as well, but I wasn't going to give WW a copy of my bank statements just so they'd keep my review up. If they want to pull the wool over brides' eyes, that's their prerogative.

There are a couple of websites that will never show the bad reviews because the business pay for them to only show the good reviews. I wonder if all the vendors on here pay for the removal of bad reviews.
