I am having a hard time deciding between having a served sit down dinner or buffet style. We will have around 150 guests in attendance. The wedding is more on the formal side but nothing crazy. The cost difference between buffet and plated is nothing at all! That's where the difficulty in my choice lies. My FH and I haven't been to too many weddings so don't have too much insight. Anyone have any ideas?! Hate one, love the other for any specific reasons? One thing our DOC said is that if we did do buffet it would have to be out in the hall due to size of the buffet serving area, not sure if I like that idea too much...HELP

We are leaning towards a duet plate. Buffet is more expensive at our venue and like you OP we are planning about 150 and that in my opinion is too many people for a buffet

Team plated. I hate waiting in line in my nice dress to get food especially if there's over 100 guests

I prefer buffet. It's definitely a bit more casual and more ideal for smaller weddings. I have been to many weddings with both. At a buffet people get to serve themselves, they decide what they want and how much. They could have a little bit of several entrees for example. I don't like the idea of plated where you chose your entree ahead of time and that's all you get. People get things they didn't want/wont eat. Some people get more than they want and some people don't get enough. Sure you could have tons of courses to make sure no one goes hungry but that's a lot of extra cost and food waste.

I find it funny that people say the downside of buffet is people waiting. I have been at plated weddings where my table had to wait a long time while 20 tables were serves before us. It depends how good your caterers are at getting all the food out at once and how many wait staff they have (more could mean more costs to you).

There are also buffets which are manned by service staff. This would be if you are concerned about running out of food I suppose. I went to a wedding with a service buffet where the server refused to give me more of the two vegetarian options even though I wasn't taking any of the meat options because everyone gets a designated portion of each. But once everyone had firsts I was able to go up for seconds. I think every plated service I have been to has been a negative experience for me, although as a vegetarian my experience is a little different than an average guest. There was one wedding where the vegetarian 'meals' (a small side plate of pasta in generic sauce) came 20 minutes before the rest of the entrees at our table. My friends literally passed around a plate where they all gave me some of their veggies. Letting people chose their food, their portion size, and get seconds if they want...i cant stress these enough!!
