Proposal, although we are already married

Jennifer, on August 2, 2016 at 11:52 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 36

My wife and I were married on 1/28/16. We were married by JP, in our dining room, nobody present. We told our closest family and friends after and we did this because of a very unique circumstance. We had "plans" and we're taking the steps toward them. My wife had just sold her house (I'm talking about 1 week prior) to me receiving a very serious medical diagnosis. We were moved in together, but she literally sold everything she owned to join her life with me. I was facing major surgery and my prognosis was undetermined. Her insurance was also much better than mine in the event I needed major surgery and treatment. We made the decision within hours for 2 reasons, first being I needed to make sure my wife had security if I became sick, being she had just sold all her ascents, and two financially, her insurance would cover my treatments and surgery.

Here we are a year later, and we want to renew our vows and I want to give her the proposal she has always wanted. Any thoughts?

I should add, we want to do a vow renewal and celebration with family and friends... I just don't know how to approach a proposal. Is it weird to propose if we are already married? We are both non-traditional and very simple... I just want her to feel special and I want her to have "that moment" with a beautiful ring.

In this situation, a proposal would be a lovely gesture. Good luck!

I think that is incredibly sweet. A little unusual, sure, but very sweet nonetheless.

ETA: It's not weird, just ask her "will you marry me...again?" Smiley smile

Actually I think it's sweet. And she probably won't expect it since you're already married. Has she ever told you about her dream proposal? Or do you have a special 1st date place you could do it at?

I've seen proposals that are "will you marry me again" types for vow renewals. And especially given your circumstances I think it would be very sweet!

Your story is tugging at my heartstrings. I agree with @AMW and you can ask her to marry you again. I don't think this is weird at all.

Any ideas oh how to disclose this afterwards? So I want to do this on our vacation in another week. I know she is going to want to post it for the world to see! How to we say this to friends? I want them to know we were already married, because I don't want them to feel lied to. But I want to do it in a unique way.

This is so sweet. She could just caption it something like "I said YES...again!!"

I think it's super sweet! It'll be a total surprise and she will love it. Is there somewhere you go together that's special to you?

I think in this situation a proposal would be so sweet! I don't think you need to explain to anyone the situation.. she could just say, as PP have said, "I said yes AGAIN!". Totally understandable and so sweet!

I wish you guys nothing but happiness!

My husband and I were in the same situation. We had to get married due to legal reasons and a terrible disease. We discussed it, agreed on it and went to the courthouse. He hadn't really saved money for a ring because it was so unexpected so he bought me a Pandora ring that I wore until he saved up enough to get me a gorgeous engagement ring. I had no idea he was planning anything, but on New Year's Eve, when the fireworks went off he re-proposed with a beautiful ring in front of my parents. He said he chose to do it on New Years because he wants me to have something sparkly every time I see fireworks.

All of that to say, you are a very sweet and no matter how you choose to do it, she will love it.

Also, I don't wear a wedding band because we wanted to wait until our wedding (or vow renewal, I guess) to exchange bands.

I think its super sweet that you want to propose again.

Truly, as PP's have mentioned, just the "again" should do it, and when you send out invites for your vow renewal, just make sure that its stated that its a vow renewal and you should be good. Smiley smile

Ivonne: your husband sounds like a wonderful guy. The sparkly and fireworks comment is so sweet.

That is so incredibly sweet!! You can have her say "again" then if people ask just tell them yes your married but you wanted your wife to have the proposal she always wanted and a big celebration with family so you chose to do a vow renewal. Smiley smile

So this is my plan... Since the beginning of our relationship, we have always captioned our pictures with "fairy tales do come true".... We are going to Disney and I was thinking to do it I front of Cinderella's castle... I know a bit cliché, but I couldn't think of a more perfect place! I have two children who love and adore her... We are going as a family and I am thinking of how to incorporate them into this. They helped me pick out her ring and they are both super excited (I told them the plan)! They also know we are already married. I thought it was good to share our story with them so they know not everything has to be like the moviesSmiley smile

Ivonne: I have a Pandora band as my wedding band!! Your post made me smile. She used a ring I gave her for her birthday that has our 1st date engraved.

Thank you so much everyone! I just really needed a place to ask questions that didn't involve FB! This site has been so helpful! Bless you all! Xoxo

I think this is so sweet! As long as you include the word "again," people will get the message.
