Prop Bets

Kayla, on July 14, 2020 at 2:17 PM Posted in Planning 0 5

FH and I's whole lives pretty much revolve around sports since he is the Marketing Director at our local college. To help incorporate the sports love into our wedding we thought it might be fun to do some prop bets on the wedding. For some examples think of the Super Bowl- how long will the anthem last, who will be the MVP, what the score will be, etc. So I've got a few questions.

1) What do you think would be some fun things to bet on? We're thinking things like who will cry first, will my dad cry walking me down the isle, etc.

2) Logistically what do you think would work better? We though about maybe giving out some prizes, but aren't for sure. So we are thinking about doing just straight dollars- so having everyone put a dollar in the jar they want to bet on. The second option would be just straight raffle tickets and having people write their name on them so we could possible give out prizes. The last option would be to potentially sell the raffle tickets (would need to talk to our venue/look at state laws about this one) so that we could still have that "betting/gambling" feel but also still be able to give out prizes if we wanted. If we did the dollars or sold tickets we would put up a sign saying that all money will go to our honeymoon fund.

I have seen people do tip jar style bets. It is more of a for fun kind of thing. Like one jar is labeled dad will cry and one is labeled dad won't cry etc.

I think this is a cute idea. I was thinking who will give the best speech- but that’s really subjective. Maybe who’s mom will cry first, will the flower girl/ring bearer make it to the end of the aisle, will the couple smash cake in each others faces/who gets cake smashed in their face (I personally hate this tradition, but 🤷‍♀️), how many awkward stories will be shared during toasts, what will the first dance song be.
I think having people place dollar bills in a jar is cute and simpler than buying raffle tickets and having someone talked with selling them, but if you’re wanting to give prizes how will you know who won? I’m just thinking logistically, you’re going to have to have someone in charge of keeping track of all of this, maybe there’s an app?

I found this one and thought it was super cute for this kind of thing:

Cute idea! This is probably best done during cocktail hour and almost trivia-style (each person filling out a question/answer list and calculating their score at the end of the night). You could do over/under for different speeches. Maybe guess the cake flavor(s)? Furthest state traveled from? Longest marriage of the guests in attendance? Then you need to appoint someone to have or note the answers. And maybe during a lull in the reception the DJ announces the answers?

I don’t like the element of money because that turns this into a honey-fund/money dance thing which is not in favor with many crowds. The cash I bring to a wedding is to tip the bar staff, so if I wanted to participate as you’ve suggested it would eat away at what I would tip the bar staff. :/
I wouldn’t bet on anything involving crying as I think you risk someone taking that the wrong way. You don’t want to make fun of someone’s emotion. Or create this pressure to have a certain emotional reaction.
