Maid of Honor Speech

Hi! I’m Sara, the maid of honor. Rachel was my roommate throughout college, big sister in our sorority, and is one of my closest friends. I am so honored to be here to celebrate Rachel and Kyle’s special day. The first time I met Rachel, we were partnered by our sorority and met up at our college dining hall for lunch. I was captivated by her soft-spoken, kind, and genuine personality. All of a sudden, as we were sharing stories and telling each other about ourselves, some of my food visibly flew out of my mouth. I was so embarrassed- here I was, trying to impress this beautiful, blonde, blue-eyed cheerleader, and I looked like a total slob! Fortunately, Rachel laughed it off and we continued the conversation by sharing additional embarrassing moments that each of us had. I knew at that moment that Rachel was someone I could trust and who would be a wonderful friend.

Soon after Rachel and I became close, Rachel told me about Kyle, her boyfriend- and a guy she’d had a crush on since high school! Before I even met him, I could already tell he was a great guy and that he made Rachel very happy. There was this painting in our dorm room of a butterfly that Rachel hung up, and I commented on how pretty it was- then she said, “Kyle made me that!” I thought, “wow- he’s definitely a keeper!”. The first time I actually met Kyle was at a Jungle themed party in college. For the party, Rachel and Kyle dressed up as Dora the Explorer and Swiper. How many guys do you know that would be willing to dress up as Swiper? I definitely don’t know many! I continued to be impressed with Kyle when he surprised Rachel with gestures such as writing a song for her on his guitar, surprising her at college on her birthday, and flying halfway across the world to propose to her in Europe.

Rachel and Kyle both bring out the best in each other- his outgoing personality perfectly pairs with her gentle demeanor. They both enjoy helping each other grow in countless ways, whether it be cooking the perfect dish or taking the tough path on a hiking trail. They challenge each other to be the best person they can possibly be, but do so in a loving and playful manner. Philosopher Lao Tzu once said, “to love someone deeply gives you strength. Being loved by someone deeply gives you courage.” It is clear to see that Rachel and Kyle both have tremendous strength and courage as the foundation for their relationship, and I wish them both the tremendous happiness as they begin their journey together in marriage. I am so happy for you both- here’s to the bride and groom!
