Professional makeup artist advice! Please help!

Olivia, on March 11, 2021 at 6:25 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 19
Hi everyone! I’m getting married March 27th and am freaking out about my foundation! I hired a professional makeup artist (who is also a friend and wedding guest-first mistake) but I’m not totally happy and am wondering if I’m just being too picky and should leave well enough alone. I originally had her do my makeup for our engagement shoot ($70 plus $20 tip) and it was way too heavy. I felt like a clown instead of feeling pretty. Luckily the pictures still came out nice.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago, we did a trial for the wedding day ($90). She was over an hour late, making me feel rushed for my hair trial and not leaving much time to correct anything. I gave her some feedback on what I wanted done differently and she delivered pretty well. By the time she was finished I had to rush to my hair appointment so I didn’t look as closely as I would have liked to. (I also think I was so pleased because the engagement makeup was so bad and this was a vast improvement.)
After my hair trial I took some photos and started looking at my makeup more and noticed the foundation was already coming off within 2 hours . This is one of my biggest issues. She used Wet N Wild foundation ($5). I don’t know how to tell her that one of the reasons I wanted to use a makeup artist was to use high quality makeup that I wouldn’t normally purchase. I’m paying $120 for day of makeup and I was hoping for higher quality products that at least stay.
She asked me the next day how everything went and I told her the foundation didn’t stay well. ( I was stupid and told her I wore a mask to the hair trial, which she immediately used as the reasoning why it didn’t last).
I’m at a complete loss for what to do. I don’t want to insult her as a friend or professional but I feel like I’m paying good money for a service and getting mediocre products. ( I also realize that I’m also paying for her expertise, not just products so I get that but am still very bothered by it). I’ve been researching good foundations but at the same time don’t feel like I should be paying $120 for makeup and then have to buy my own expensive makeup as well. I can be picky about makeup and didn’t want the stress of worrying about doing my own and having to select the right products, but I’m now feeling like I don’t trust my friend/ makeup artist to get good products. Anyone have any advice? Am I being too critical? If you’ve read this far, thank you so much! (1st photo is engagement shoot next 2 are wedding trial) Professional makeup artist advice! Please help! 1

I'm not sure where you live/having your wedding, but around me (buffalo NY) air brush for the bride ranges from $125-$250 depending on salon. That's not including travel just the amount listed on their site.

I'd find a place you like, get a trial and then decide.

I don't think you're being too critical. While your makeup may look nice, I hate to say it, but I'd find a new makeup artist ASAP. No professional makeup artist should be using wet and wild foundation for bridal makeup. That stuff is not meant to last all day, and definitely not the type of foundation that's meant to be photographed in HD. While I might expect to pay more than $120 for bridal makeup (depending on where you're located), no professional should be using dollar store makeup on the bride.

If you're noy happy, keep looking. A good beautician worth their salt will adjust the look during your visit until you are hapoy. Don't be afraid to speak up.

Browse Instagram in your city for makeup artists.

I definitely agree that the second trial came out WAY better, but as you mentioned you shouldn’t be paying this much money for your makeup for her to be using the cheapest foundation possible for your wedding day that you could buy on your own. I don’t think you’re being overly critical at all, especially if she’s charging close to the same amount that a regular professional makeup artist would

So first of all I think you look absolutely gorgeous in all the pictures. I don't think the style is the problem. But I cringed so hard when you mentioned that $5 foundation 😳😬 my everyday foundation is around $40. She shouldn't be using Walmart level products for professional makeup. I would keep looking but use these pictures as inspo.

Thank you all for the advice and confirming that I’m not being a bridezilla! The drugstore foundation is what has me unhappy I’m just worried about not being able to find another makeup artist so close to the wedding! I want to tell my current artist that I’d prefer she use a better quality foundation but I don’t know what to even suggest (I was hoping I’d be able to trust the makeup artist for that!)

I totally get your frustration and concern! She should 100% be using quality products. That’s on her, not you, and I think it’s okay to politely voice that concern to her.

I’ll play devils advocate and say this: yes what you’re paying is definitely a lot for using drugstore foundation. however, there’s nothing wrong with using that foundation if that’s her professional opinion if what works well. Maybe she’s used others but comes back to the WnW.
Sure products matter, but you’re paying for the work as well. You clearly know this as you mentioned this thought. She clearly did an amazing job with the Makeup- her skills are what you’re paying for. If you’re really that uncomfortable knowing she’s using products that are affordable and not luxury simply talk to her about it. If she can’t provide “higher quality” makeup then find a new makeup artist who uses this type of makeup. This is my honest opinion. No bash or hate at all! I completely understand why you want better products used since it’s pricey and your wedding day. But at the same time, you want to trust your makeup artist especially if you liked the outcome.
Also, as someone who’s doing her own bridal makeup I am in fact using a wet n wild foundation for my makeup and it looks amazing on me, lasts all day, and barely transfers or moves on my skin. My entire makeup look is drugstore! No reason to hate on affordable makeup that is really good quality!Good luck and keep us updated!

Oh no! Professional makeup artists should be using professional quality makeup. I'd look elsewhere for a new vendor...Also, if you're open to it and want something that will truly last all day, then I'd recommend airbrush.

I'm not sure where you live, but I'm guessing you have an Ulta or Sephora nearby (if not both). They should be able to give product recommendations and maybe even recommend a new makeup pro. I consider myself to be on very friendly terms with my hair and makeup pro and I trust her completely, but if she pulled out wet-n-wild anything she'd better have a very good "seriously this is the best stuff" story to go with it and I better be blown away with the results.

I used Tarte's Amazonian Clay foundation for a long long while, and recently switched to Too Faced. I still like Tarte's, but I find that TF is more liquidy so it's easier to get complete coverage. I do like Tarte's Shape Tape concealer though. I am not a makeup expert by any means but I found these easy to use for someone with basic knowledge of makeup, and I also liked that they are cruelty free and not made in China. For eye makeup I really like Juvia's Place; they have a lovely palette of champagne and copper tones.

But you are correct that your MUA should be able to provide product recommendations.

Tell this friendor that you decided that you want her to enjoy herself as a guest, and find a new artist stat.

No professional should be using $5 drugstore makeup for foundation. My HMA did multiple layers of foundation to account for my wearing a mask. it looked great and stayed on.

I recently had to let go of my hair stylist, I worked with her salon in the past and she and her mom became close friends of mine, I felt so bad but I was so stressed out because I wasn't happy with my hair after 3 hair trials. So I made the hard decision to let her go and found a new salon. The moment I talked to her a huge relief came to me even if I had no hair salon yet as back up, best decision I ever made! This is your day and you should feel happy and beautiful plus you don't want to look at your pictures for the rest of your life with regrets.

Just to dispute her mask excuse - I got airbrush makeup for my wedding and had to wear a mask for a duration of time prior to the ceremony. Not a smudge of makeup on the mask and everything stayed in place - as it should with professional makeup.
I’m all about supporting small businesses but make sure for your big day you get someone that understands wedding makeup.

She doesn't sound very professional, and if the foundation is budging after 2 hours, that's no good (could also be lack of a good primer, but regardless its a problem). I don't think the makeup looks bad but it is quite intense - more like beauty pageant stage makeup than something one wears out in public in the real world. I don't think you are being overly critical. You are not receiving value for your investment. It would be one thing if you were paying $30-$40 for a friend who does makeup as a hobby to do your wedding look in cheap drugstore makeup, but if your friend considers is the same price as a professional MUA would but not using professional products or behaving in a professional manner, then you should not use her for your wedding day.

Perhaps you could find someone else to do your makeup and say you felt like it wasn't fair to have her "working" your wedding when you wanted her to be a guest. It sounds like having her as a friend and wedding guest is more important than having her do your make up for your day.

    *UPDATE!*
Thank you all so much for your honest feedback! You guys gave me more courage to speak up and realize I wasn’t being crazy!

I ended up going to Sephora in search of a better foundation to go ahead and buy myself to have my friend/ MUA use. I talked with the girl at Sephora and told her my situation and she happens to be a makeup artist. She showed me some of her previous work on other brides and I liked what I saw! She uses quality products, does beautiful work (from her portfolio), and is charging $150 total which includes a trial. I ended up booking her for a trial.
Fast forward to today (trial day) and I’m so happy I didn’t settle for something I wasn’t happy with! I feel beautiful and my makeup hasn’t budged all day (despite wearing a mask half the day!)
I took a chance and talked to my friendor earlier this week and let her know that I want her to enjoy herself as a guest. I hadn’t even seen the new artists work yet but knew I wasn’t happy with the current makeup and would regret it for my wedding. My friend was understanding and is still coming to the wedding! I’m so relieved and wish I would have just spoke up sooner!
