Professional Dyeing

Kelly, on March 28, 2022 at 9:54 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 4

I previously thought I would wear a red dress for my wedding, but now I'm considering a white satin dress. I would want to dye it after the wedding so I could wear it again. How do I go about finding a professional to do this? I do not want to do it myself.

This would be something a gown maker would be able to handle. Most seamstresses probably wouldn't. I would look up custom gowns in your area (or on etsy if you're comfortable shipping it to someone) and reach out to those people to see if they would do it for you.

Certain fibers dye better than others - natural fibers like silk and cotton tend to dye well, synthetic fibers like polyester do not. Satin is technically a weave of fabric (not a fiber) so it can be made of different materials. The most common inexpensive version is polyester satin, although higher end dresses can be made of silk.

I would contact a professional experienced in dying wedding dresses BEFORE purchasing your wedding dress to determine cost and limitations, so you know what to consider when buying your dress. You'll probably need to take into account the fiber content of the dress as well as any trim, seams, etc.

Most dressmakers will steer you away from this. It’s better to have a dress made in the color you want or seek out prom/evening gowns. Many fabrics don’t take dyes well and you could have a disaster on your hands that isn’t salvageable.

I'd be dyeing the dress after my wedding. If it gets damaged it'll be disappointing, but it won't be that bad.
