Private Invite Wording

Claire , on August 8, 2016 at 2:18 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 6

So FH and I decided that we are have a small private ceremony in the morning with just immediate family (15ppl) and a huge reception later that evening(100-150 ppl). Are there any suggestions on how to word this so it won't offend anyone/ get our point a cross? Thanks!

Send ceremony and reception invites to the 15

Send "celebration of marriage" invites to the 100 ppl. Dont try to over explain or you will confuse ppl and cause hurt feelings. Keep it simple.

On the invitation, call it a Celebration of the Marriage. "You are invited to Celebrate the Marriage of XX"

You can also do "Surprise! We Eloped" come celebrate our marriage!

Saying that they eloped is slightly misleading as that is not the same as a private ceremony.

    Name and Name

request the pleasure of your company

    to celebrate their marriage

    date time

    venue name

    address

"pleasure of your company" is used for a reception instead of "honor of your presence" for a ceremony and reception. You don't have to tell anyone on the invitations that the ceremony is private. They should know from the wording on the invite.

I agree with pp's suggesting the reception invites request the presence for a celebration of your marriage. I wouldn't say anything about eloping, because that is not what you're doing.
