Pricing for videographer and photographer

Corinne, on May 1, 2017 at 12:56 PM Posted in Planning 0 13

My FH and I are in the beginning stages of planning and wondering what is too much for a photographer. We want someone from like 10am to midnight and a videographer. Someone told us $8000 but that is just not going to be plausible with our budget. Any and all advice would be appreciated!

    Hi Corinne,

That honestly sounds pretty industry standard to me. I'm not sure what area you're in...but we're getting our photographer for $3700, and she's only with us for 6 hours day-of. Our videographer is $2300. Remember, you get what you pay for...and these photos/video are all you'll have left after the day is over.

12 hours of coverage is a lot. The $8000 price tag, for both I'm assuming, sounds very reasonable for the area you are in. The big question is, are you price shopping or more concerned with quality? Another thing to think about is parring down on the number of hours being covered. IMO if you are wanting full coverage, start with the last 30 minutes of getting ready and end 30 minutes after the First Dance.

"Too much" for photography is dependent on what you can spend and what you are willing to sacrifice when it comes to service. Great service and quality does not come cheap. 10 hours is a lot and often times couples don't need that much time. I usually recommend no less than 5 or 6 hours, but often 7 or 8 hours is plenty (depending on location of getting ready, ceremony, reception, travel time, etc.). $8,000 for photography AND videography, especially for that many hours, sounds very reasonable. Photography usually starts at $1,500 and goes up to $5,000 and beyond - for excellent quality and service.

Focus on the quality of work of photographers you're looking at, not just the price. Make sure you read reviews and look at FULL galleries, not just portfolio highlights. Move around other things in your budget so you can afford a great photographer (photos are all you have left, besides a spouse, after the wedding is over)... Skip save the dates, programs, favors, have less decor, have less flowers, don't have a bridal party (this reduces bouquets and gifts), etc. so you can budget for a photographer who has beautiful work.

ETA: Also, the cost of photography and videography is not just for the day of your wedding, which is what many people think ("$4,000 for just 8 hours?!")... There are countless hours, days, and weeks that go into your photos and videos long after your wedding day is over.

You get what you pay for. I would rather pay top dollar for those vs spend money on a useless favor and stable number. 10 years from now you will treasure those and could careless on how the table was set.

It depends on your location but prices can vary. The $8,000 sounds pretty normal. We are paying about $6500 for two photogs and a videographer, they are with us for 12 hours. Our price will probably go up about another $1500 once we order an album through them,

14 hours is a long time. If that is what you are wanting, the price sounds about right.

We had 7 hours, one photog, digital only, engagement pics included for $3,700. Which was a steal because it was a friend from high school. I didn't have a videographer and I regret that so much.

The one we want for our daughters wedding will be about $2200. This is engagement photos, 7 hours of coverage with a second shooter. Up in the air about video......the price I received ranges from $****. Our photographer did give us a discount. He works alot of weddings where I work, we appreciate the discount. He is my favorite photographer. (we are in MD)

    Albums are $$$$.

That sounds like a pretty average price for a quality photo and video package, at least according to pricing in my area. Good photographers here tend to run in the $3,500-$7,000 range, and videography would be somewhere around $2,500-$5,000.

As far as budgets go, guest experience should always come first. This means good food and drink at a comfortable seat in a temperature-controlled space. After the guest experience, photography is our top priority. Favors and pretty paper products and centerpieces are all depleted or trashed by the end of the night; photos endure forever. It's not a place to skimp.

We are paying $3500 in Chicago for 14 hrs of coverage with an amazing photographer and 2 other shooters, including our epics. No video.

For what you want I think that figure actually sounds reasonable. But if it is more than you'd like to spend, think about how much time you really need and that could help the costs -- our 14 hrs is because our "getting ready" starts early. Do you really need them to stay til 12am? After a while, dancing pics all start to look the same and your guests will start to look sloppier. Ours is staying 1 hour into dancing.

I don't recommend bundling the services.

I recommend a small group of photographers and even smaller of video.

My photographers run **** and video from ****.

You're date is kinda off season; you might be able to do a shorter period of time, but you're also looking at a year and a half away, so good people might not be willing to commit to a shorter period of time this soon.

I am on a tight budget and I and have to think outside the box for our photos and video. We are finding a photographer to work within a $1000 budget. That may not cover all day to all night, but in our area it would cover the "getting ready" pictures, ceremony, and maybe 1-2 hours into the reception for the "important" shots. We are going with someone who is naturally very talented and is up and coming into the wedding photo industry. As for videographer...that one is a lot more tough as the basic packages I could find started around $1500 for just a highlight video. I could not afford this, but having a video was my most important thing on my wish list, so we are going with "WeddingMix". It isn't a professional videographer service, but it was the best alternative we could afford. I am already using the service and we are making our own videos during our whole engagement (you get an app that you and your guests can download and use to make photos/videos and they can give you video cameras to rent and pass around for fun at the wedding). Then after your honeymoon, the people at WeddingMix will professionally put together an edited video for you with all of your footage (and you get to keep the raw footage). It is costing me under $700 for this. Yes, it is not "professional per se", but I think it is better than no video at all. I have a 10% off coupon I can share for their services too. Why not save more LOL!
