Preserving Dress

Jasmin, on September 23, 2020 at 8:52 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 12
Hey y’all
I’m getting married October of 2021, and my wedding dress is going to be arriving 10 months before my heading. Can you all share with me how I can preserve it for 10 months? All suggestions welcome! 💖

I’m not an expert, but I know the general rules are do NOT leave it in plastic, rather, paper. I would suggest finding a place it can lay rather than hang also.

I would leave it in the garment bag and find a place (preferably a dark closet) to lay it flat.

I'm in the same boat! I bought my dress for Oct 2020 but wound up moving the date to Oct 2021. My bridal salon recommended that I lay it flat on an unused bed (like a guest room bed) if possible, or hang it in a dimly lit well ventilated place with all the excess fabric (train) supported by the little loops that come attached (I can't remember what they're called). Just to be safe, check on it every few weeks and make sure the loops aren't straining if you're hanging it.

I have to leave mine hanging since we have no guest room or place where my fiance wouldn't see it.

I got my gown at a sample sale a year before my original date. I bought this garnet bag from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/b001asxoue/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_na2afbqja7q08 and stored it in the guest room closet at my mom’s house. It held up perfectly.

I bought a sample dress about 9 and 1/2 months from my wedding date, so I took it home with me. My MIL just hung it up in an unused closet in her house (I think husband's old room actually lol) until I took it for the fitting. It was in a garment bag the whole time, and it was in the same condition after all that time. The seamstress steamed the dress after the alterations were finished and it was perfect.

I was told just to store it in a dark closet.

My dress came 5 months before my wedding date (it arrived 2 months early). My mom didn’t want us to be responsible for anything happening to it during that time so we had the bridal shop store it for us. It cost about $30/month but it gave us peace of mind knowing that if something happened to it, it wasn’t on us. Haha.
