Premarital Prep

Hi! Anyone have any premarital book recommendations? Was looking at a few on Amazon but would like some insight.

Thanks!

I really enjoyed reading "The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work" by Dr. John Gottman. He is a researcher who has spent like 40 years researching marriages and couples, and this book is a culmination of his findings, as well as research from other scholars in the field. It's meant for the general public, so it isn't an academic book. But I really like that this is grounded in decades of scientific research. There are also little exercises and questionnaires that you and your partner can fill out/discuss as a workbook component.

Churches and therapists offer pre-marital classes. But never met anyone who did an at-home book course. Usually if you skip the classes, most have a discussion on various topics and leave it at that.

I agree with the 5 Love Languages and the Gottman book. Daughter and SIL really enjoyed 1001 Questions to Ask Before Marriage. They'd talk about a couple of questions over dinner and learned a lot (and at that point they'd already been together for ~6 yrs). She now buys the book as an engagement present for friends.

I agree with the 5 Love Languages book! I suggest you and your fiance both read it separately, and then discuss each chapter together.

Gary Chapman also has a book called “Things I Wish I’d Known Before We Got Married.” In addition to premarital counseling, my fiancé and I read this book together and often discussed the chapters over dinner, like a book club. Our “book club” recaps were cool and low key and helped facilitate a lot of important discussions.
