That’s tough. As much as it could be comfortable having someone you know, it may be best to have a neutral party that can mediate any issues that may come up fairly and without bias. Also it may be less comfortable having someone who knows you personally to connect and know that much personal detail. I would probably go with a neutral stranger.

I think personally it would be easier for a complete stranger. While having someone you know be a mediator, it could potentially put a strain on your relationship once they know some private details. While you would hope that wouldn't happen, but ultimately it usually does.

I'd go with a well qualified stranger.... A friend/co-worker is potentially too connected to one or both of you to be unbiased, and with some people, I'd be concerned about confidentiality. (FWIW I've worked in a church-related organization and have found NOTHING to be confidential....)

No, do not use a personal friend/coworker. To be blunt, legally and ethically, they shouldn't do it. Far too much potential to get very messy, or to insert their own feelings.

Hire a professional stranger.

Hello I personally think you want an unbiased opinion and for a stranger who has no firsthand knowledge of either of you to give you fair, counseling and advice.
