Premarital counseling -- online?

s.m, on July 25, 2016 at 9:16 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 6

We are considering doing an online premarital counseling course. Has anyone done something similar and what was your experience like? Was it helpful and would you recommend it?

Thanks!

As a therapist I'd advise against this. Online courses are great just to have extra information between the two of you, but effective counseling really needs to happen in-person. The therapist needs to be able to see your body language and your interactions with each other face-to-face.

If you can I would go see an actual therapist. FH and I did counseling and it was awesome having someone actually there will us to guide us through the process. I don't think you'll get much out of online counseling.

I'm not doing online counseling but my FH just moved 550 plus miles away from me so we are doing 3 way Skype counseling with our pastor!

I agree counseling should be done in person but if it's your only option, it's better than nothing. FH and I did pre-marital counseling and already our relationship is so much better- we were one of those couples that didn't think we really needed it but we'd give it a shot anyway. We definitely needed it. Definitely. So do it!

I've never heard about this, but I can imagine it has similar types of outcomes as if you did an online class. Premarital counseling is all about communication, and if you have ever taken an online class you know that you get a very different and less communicative, collaborative experience through them. I know they are totally different things, but still I am thinking online would be less personal. If you have a need like @Katie, she has a good suggestion^^!

The in person counseling sessions are very helpful if you take them seriously and are thoughtful about them, definitely worth it!

We did an online premarital class called Magical Marriage in 21 Days and it was seriously life-changing for both of us. My fiance loved it just as much as I did! I definately agree you get out of it what you put in it but if I could do it over again, I would do the online class before we did pre-counseling. We did the in-person counseling first and it was really expensive and I honestly felt the online marriage class was much more helpful and I'm not sure if we would even have need to do the in-person counseling (I would rather have it put the money toward our upcoming wedding!). The class online was $25 and it covered pretty much every single area (except sex but that was fine with me!) and helped us get to know each other SO much better and taught us how to talk through anything and everything! I feel so much more confident going into our marriage after the online class. So yeah I would definately recommend at least trying an online class!
