I definitely want to complete a premarital counseling program because I believe it will be beneficial. I reached out to three counselors. I just finished speaking to one, and she explained the process and how it could help. However, the cost was more than I anticipated. For six sessions, it was $950, but they had a special for $650. I was thinking it would be around $500. I am going to talk to the other two counselors first to find the best fit but is this price typical for non-religious premarital counseling? Hoping WW can give me some perspective. Thanks!

I would recommend going through a local university. The university closest to me has a graduate counseling office and provides premarital counseling. It was $40 total per session(hour and half) and we had a male and female counselor. They were graduate students about to graduate with their Doctorate and walk out to do the same thing for triple the cost. It was AMAZING & worth it.

We have three sessions included with the cost of our officiant (which is only $250). I agree with some PPs though that compared to what you're paying for other wedding services, it really isn't a lot. Plus, it's much cheaper than a divorce down the road. I think it's worth every penny.

Ours was free through our church (and also required to be married there), but I would definitely look into any programs that churches in your area may offer. They probably have a once a week class or course that you can take for free or for a small fee (around $50) As important as premarital counseling is, $950 is ridiculously excessive, especially when so many pastors will do it for free or next to nothing. ..Unless you have an issue with going to a church. Then the money is worth it! Smiley winking

@ ashley-Thanks for the suggestion! I am going to call after the holiday. I didn't think of this, but it looks like they have it as a option.

The cheapest I could find was $250 per session; but we ended up going through my EAP at work so it was free.

That does seem pricey! Ours will be free from my minister. He requires three sessions. He also will give us a copy of the book "The Five Love Languages". He says it really helps couples find out what parts of their relationship is the strongest.

Not sure where you live, but Texas does a program called "Twogether in Texas". You might try seeing if your state offers anything like that!
