Prego photographer?

Toni, on May 13, 2019 at 12:49 PM Posted in Planning 0 20
My photographer just announced she’s pregnant (yay!) she’s due in Mid December and my wedding is January 25th. I’m worried that I’m asking too much of her to photograph my wedding one month after her baby is born(it’ll be an all day event as well). She’s assured me that she will be fine but I can’t stop thinking what if something comes up last minute and I’m left picture less. Would it be harsh of me to find a different photographer with less of a risk? We haven’t signed a contract or put money down yet.
Thoughts?

Even though she has assured you, you never know how she is going to feel after the baby comes. I would find a new photographer.

She's the pro, she should be able to let you know if it's within her comfort level.

That said, I'd ask her to include something in your contract about if she's not available for the wedding date that she's responsible for providing a photographer for you that shoots in a similar style. Or even just what happens if she can't come.

Our photog has that in her contract, and told us that if for some reason (sickness or whatever) she cannot be there she will provide a photographer who has a similar shooting style, but she will still edit and process the images herself.

You should ask her what her plan is in the event she is unable to make it. Not just because she is having a baby, but you should make sure she has a backup plan in general. What if she gets sick? We asked our photographer this to begin with... if something happens and our main photographer can't make it, the owner of the business (who usually just deals with logistics, and editing the photos) will take our photographer's place.

I would hope that she wouldn’t string me along just to bail in the end! I will ask her about a contract addition

Most photographers have a designated back up person in instances where she got hurt or was unable to shoot your wedding. I would just reach out to her and ask her who the back up photographers are. Also some photographers have more than one photographer within their company.

I don't think getting a new photographer would be necessary, because the same chance of her not being ready to shoot a month after the baby is born - could be the same chance that she gets hurt and is unable to shoot. They have to have some sort of a back-up. I think your concern is 100% reasonable, but I would share your concern with her and see what her plan is!

Ask what her plan is in the event she has a complicated delivery and a longer recovery? Does she have a second shooter/etc.? If you are comfortable with her answer. Request a contract so you have everything in writing so you aren't screwed out of your money.

If she won't give you a contract or doesn't have a good plan, find someone new.

I felt the same way when I was looking for a makeup artist. My FMIL has a family friend that does makeup. She is literally due a week before my wedding. She assured me she is "loyal" and wouldn't miss the appointment. It is her first child, she has no idea how it will go and how she will feel. What if she is early? What if she is late? What if she has to have a c-section, major surgery, no standing, bending, lifting things for weeks? I declined and found someone else. I feel bad for not choosing her for that reason but I can't risk it.

I would get a different photographer. Obviously it’s nothing against her but I’ve heard horror stories about pregnant photographers and no communication/photos.

She’s an individual photographer with no second shooter. Her back up plan is to refund me and give me enough notice to find someone else..

That's just not a good enough back up plan for me. Thank her and tell her you are going to have to look for a new photographer.

Does your contract mention a backup photographer?

We haven’t signed a contract but when I asked the question she said “she does her best to avoid these situations but in the case it happens she issues a full refund and gives enough time ahead to get a new photographer”

I wouldnt feel 100% sure. Since a contract hasnt been signed I would have her edit it and state in the case of XYZ you will not be penalized and you have a backup.

I'd be very hesitant about any vendor contract where the back-up plan is "they'll give you enough notice to find a replacement." True emergencies aren't planned months in advance. Every vendor daughter interviewed was asked about their back-up plan and if they didn't have a super solid "this is who will cover your event; I've worked with them for years and completely trust them to provide the same service I would," she moved on. Things happen, you and your vendors can't prevent that, but professionals should have a really strong contingency plan. Personally, I'd find someone else, not because this photographer is pregnant, but because she doesn't have a strong back-up plan in place.

You have a very solid point. I wasn’t happy with her back up plan but I’ve trusted her for years. I think I will have to find someone with less risk and a more solid emergency plan in place
    thank you!
