POW/MIA Table

Taryn, on September 28, 2016 at 12:09 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 7

Spin off from another thread. We are planning on doing a POW/ MIA table at our wedding. The tradition and symbolism involved is so important and I want to make sure we are doing everything correctly.

@Jennifer was very kind in offering advice and tips but of course everyone is more than welcome to offer some advice Smiley smile

I have never heard of this at a wedding. Are you and your FH both military?

"Ok, because a POW/MIA table has so much symbolism; each article about it, even the shape of the table, has symbolism. If you choose to do this, please make sure you do it right, or not at all. Below is a basic script from one of the tables, that I've performed. I'm sorry if this is long, but this is something very near and dear to me.

The only thing that is optional about the below script is the bible.

The table is small, symbolizing the frailty of one prisoner alone against their oppressors.

The table is round – to show our everlasting concern for our missing men.

The tablecloth is white – symbolizing the purity of their motives when answering the call to duty.

The single red rose, displayed in a vase, signifies the blood that many have shed in sacrifice to ensure the freedom of our beloved United States of America. The rose also reminds us of the loved ones and friends of these Americans who keep the faith, awaiting answers.

The yellow ribbon tied so prominently on the vase is reminiscent of the yellow ribbons worn on the lapels of the thousands who demand with unyielding determination a proper accounting of our comrades who are not among us tonight.

A slice of lemon is on the plate, to remind us of their bitter fate.

There is a pinch salt on the plate, symbolic of the families’ tears as they wait.

The Bible represents the strength gained through faith to sustain those lost from our country, founded as one nation under God.

The candle is reminiscent of the light of hope which lives in our hearts to illuminate their way home, away from their captors, to the open arms of a grateful nation.

The American Flag reminds us that they may never return, and have made the supreme sacrifice to insure our freedom.

The glass is inverted; They cannot share a toast with us this day.

The chair... The chair is empty. They are not here.

Now, let us raise our water glasses in a toast to honor America’s POWs/MIAs. You are not forgotten. " ~Jennifer

@OG Kathryn I just wanted to be able to ask some questions without feeling like I was hijacking the thread.

@ALC I'm not but FH is. It was one of his requests for the wedding so I'm just trying to get more info about it.

Thanks Jennifer. Is a full place setting included? I have seen some sites say yes and other say that just the bread plate and silverware is present.

Full place setting, but with only a water glass. I've seen the bread plate off to the side and placed on the dinner plate...
