Potluck wedding? Is that a thing?

Laura2.0, on July 18, 2016 at 3:44 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 63

So I was invited to wedding in September and its a potluck on the invite it said at bottom. "We ask that you contribute and bring a dish of your choosing"

This is the first time I'm ever hearing of this for wedding. It's at function hall and we have to RSVP with the dish we plan to bring. I don't mind bringing a dish, but it threw me off guard for a wedding.

Has anyone every heard or done this before?

If you go to this wedding, eat something before. Or eat there and be prepared for food poisoning. Lord help them...

Only for those who are truly adventurous and tacky. See also: cheap.

It's a thing. It's a rude thing. And quite a dangerous thing, since if everyone is bringing a dish the odds of every single kitchen being clean and every single ingredient being fresh is pretty much nil.

If you go to this thing, don't eat.

It is a thing, but I usually only see it in small town church weddings. I'm not a fan at all, I prefer hosted parties to these community involvement parties. If you attend, I wouldn't bring a gift.

My grandma suggested this. I smiled and nodded and said that we were already discussing our food options but thanked her for the suggestion.

    Yuck.

I'd go for the ceremony, drop off a Costco size bottle of Pepto, and leave.

How close are you with the bride/groom? That would be a hard no from me unless it was like, my best friend or sister, and in that situation I would tell them they were fucking up for not getting it catered.

I've heard of this and it is a thing. A terrible thing, shouldn't be a thing, but a thing. I would probably decline unless it's one of your VIP's weddings. If I did go, I'd only eat my own food.

Bring yourself some non-perishable snacks, some tums, some Immodium when the struggle gets really real, and extra TP.

I hope you aren't here just asking for a "friend."

I wouldn't do it but I think this was a popular thing in days past where all the church members brought a dish. One of my FB friends in Louisiana just got married and it was a

Potluck reception in the church hall so I spose it depends on the region.

Never heard of this. I would be caught off guard if I saw that on an invitation. Sounds like a fun night (of food poisoning)

That would be a no go for me. Super tacky. And the risk of food poisoning is through the roof! Plus, you have no idea what the cleanliness of the person who made a certain dish.

I only say that cause an Ex's mom would always lick her fingers while making food. And touch the food.

    Something to keep in mind.

My soon to be sister in law is doing that for hers but she got the idea from a wedding she went to and said it all turned out great.
