Postponing destination wedding but to a weekday?

JJ12, on July 16, 2020 at 4:50 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 12

We are now more seriously looking at postponing our wedding in Mexico this October. ugh! Our venue does have date options but they do have a re-schedule fee for weekend dates. Our wedding was originally on a Saturday with a Friday welcome party. The re-schedule fee for a saturday is not an option (+5-7k) and Fridays are only slightly cheaper. Sundays are +2500 which isn't great but not the end of the world. Mondays-Thursday are free of charge.

Personally, I think a Monday is okay. Most people that we know of who have already booked were looking at coming for 3-7 days, to me this just means they are switching the days they were already planning to take off ( Thursday/friday --> a Monday/Tuesday). My fiance thinks a Monday is odd and we should opt for sunday, but there also aren't as many sundays to pick from( ie. all sundays in April are booked, with a few options in March).

Do you think people will be more understanding of a weekday wedding given the circumstances?

I think it depends on when they planned on flying in and out. If they were going to fly in Friday then out Sunday then Monday definitely wouldn't work. Also, is Mexico allowing US citizens to travel there currently? Unfortunately, no one knows it March or April will even be safe.

I would think a Thur would be much better, assuming your guests still work. They can stay/play for the weekend if they want. Have you touched base to see how they feel about a DW now? This Covid has also really messed with people’s jobs/finances.

We had a Monday DW (same state), but only for 15 guests most of whom were retired family members.

I agree. I think destination weddings are a huge gamble at this point. If you’re going to reschedule, I would suggest rescheduling pretty far out- like mid to late 2021- in order to best avoid having to reschedule again. Especially since they’re calling for another wave of the virus in the fall. There will likely be travel restrictions for quite some time.
I also agree with the idea of a Thursday being a much better option for your guests if they work. Then they can have an extended weekend “mini-vacay”, without taking off a lot of days of work.

Ahhh ok if it is already a destination people are taking off work for then maybe do Thursday where they only take two days off at the end of the week and can leave the weekend rather coming in Monday? Also, as others have said just be sure because no quarantine now and hope it stays that way but warn guests buying tickets to check the cancellation or refund policy.

Most of our friends are raring to go, it's really my parents who are older and extenuating issues (passports in limbo, military travel restrictions) along with things getting crazier instead of better in here in CA. We don't have any friends or family who have been affected financially from covid(thankfully!) yet at least.

Only land borders for Mexico are closed aside from essentials. You can fly to Mexico right now. You are right though, who knows when is safe. We are all making guesses at this point.

I actually thought a Thursday seemed more intrusive than a Monday, since I am doubtful most would fly in same day as the wedding.

That is a very valid point. Well like you said many knew they were traveling. Here is my honest opinion do not worry about your guests rather about what you two want and what works best for your budget. If Monday is best then shoot for it. The day is about you two and if people cannot make it then that is understandable. Either way it won't be perfect for people's schedules but I am sure many will be able to make it work.

I actually like your idea of a Monday. They get the weekend to vacation leading up to the big event and actually enjoy what the resort has to offer. Then your wedding is like the finale.
The downside for you is that your time at the resort with them may be spent last minute prepping or avoiding the beach/sun because a fresh burn in your dress would be awful!

Select the day that you prefer and guests will come if they can. That actually goes for any wedding date, even weekends.

It would just have to line up with people’s flights in and out but I would imagine a weekday wedding would be easier when people are already on vacation. They’ve likely taken off work to go to Mexico, but if it was not a destination wedding they wouldn’t have taken time off work. A monday gives people travel time over the weekend too, and yes I think most people recognize the changes are out of your control
