Postponed - dress alterations??

Jenny, on July 21, 2020 at 4:20 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 6
We just made the sad decision to postpone. I'm trying to figure everything out on how to move things to next year. I recently had my first fitting for what was supposed to be October wedding. Should I call and try to cancel those alterations? I went to David's Bridal and had to pay up front. But I'm worried my body will change enough/ maybe I'll lose weight over the next year that it will make the initial alterations useless.

What did you do?

I had three fitting appointments before we had to make the decision to postpone. My seamstress told me that we should suspend any other fittings until we get closer to our new date as it would be pointless to alter the dress to the body I have now instead of the body that I'll have closer to the new date (who knows if it'll change or stay the same). I'd recommend starting your alterations again a couple months ahead of your new date.

I'm so sorry you had to postpone!!

I would recommend calling the alterations place and see if they started on the alterations yet. If they haven't, ask if they can give you a refund and pick up your dress. I went in for my first dress fitting, and then a couple weeks later, we decided to postpone our wedding. When I contacted the seamstress, they luckily hadn't started on the alterations yet, so I was able to pick up my dress without charge (since nothing was done with it).

I had a hem, bustle, bra insert and cap sleeves done very early on. Those were things that wouldn’t have changed with weight fluctuations, except maybe the bra. I wouldn’t do any taking in or letting out right now.

I would hold off on alterations as much as possible because you’re right, your body can change until next year. My seamstress said that most brides lose weight right before the wedding.

My wedding was canceled 2 weeks before so obviously all my alterations were done. Moved our wedding to next year and gained about 15 covid lbs so I’m in a panic!

Cancelled any alterations before wedding, so it’s still sitting at the tailor. Won’t do anything till I’m ready to have a wedding.
