Hello to any other postponed 2020 brides!
I stumbled on this article today and realized I had NEVER thought about this during all the hullabaloo of postponing my wedding (twice) this year: how to store my dress for more than a couple of months at home. It's a Martha Stewart article in which they interview the president of a wedding dress preservation company, and he outlines the problems postponed brides might discover after letting their dresses hang in their closets for more than a few months; here's a few:
--if hanging on a hanger, the weight of the dress can cause the shoulders or straps to stretch out
--the weight of the dress can cause areas of beading, tufts or folds to stretch out
--without storing your dress flat (laying horizontally), folds can turn into creases that are permanent damage in the material and won't come out
--storing your dress in the plastic bag (those ones many of us buy to use the day of the wedding) can cause a dress to turn yellow
Definitely never thought of my dress needing attention in the middle of everyyyything else you do while postponing. He says unless you have a really heavy or complicated dress, there's no reason to use a professional; there's a DIY video he posted that's linked in the article.
I had custom-beaded spaghetti straps put on my dress that I'd bet would have been ruined if I hadn't found this; my dress has already been hanging for 4 months but has 10 more to go now. Thought I'd share in case this might help someone else!
