Postage Vent!!! How much did you spend?

beautyofdreams, on May 13, 2016 at 10:38 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 68

OMG! I took my invites to usps and bc they are not completely flat they said the machine would rip them up and thus they need to be mailed as a parcel! $2.45 per postage. I knew they would be more but not that much more. lol. There is a small rhinestone clasp on a ribbon around the invite and bc of this its costing $2.45. I know this is my fault but I just wanted to vent about the cost of postage which is unbelievable to me. The invites are already done and sealed so it would be counterproductive for me to open them back up and take off the rhinestone clasp. What did you guys spend on postage? Was anyone else shocked?

UPDATE: So I went to 2 more post offices to see what they would say. 1 post office said my invites should be considered a large envelope .92c but the only way for me to get a refund is to go to the original post office . The 2nd post office first said .68c first class then changed it $2.45 after I told them about what the 1st charged at the first usps...ugh. overit!

I think we spent a little under $2 each on postage, plus the RSVP stamp. That said, if you have another (or several) other post offices that are convenient to you, get a "second opinion." I went to 3. And got 3 different answers on what the postage would be on the same exact invitation. Ridiculous. One of them gave me a very very high price like yours...another gave me a very low price that I didn't buy because I knew mine were a bit heavier and what they deem "rigid." I was afraid of them ALL coming back to me for insufficient postage. So, we went with the post office that gave us the middle price. Don't even get me started on how it could be different depending on what post office you go to. The USPS gives me hives.

@Summer good point. I probably should have price shopped at different locations but when she told me the machines would rip them apart I panicked and was just like I'll pay for whatever I need. smh.

@MrsInSeptember you are very smart! Thinking back I could have definitely done the ribbon without the rhinestone piece.

@beautyofdreams...I never would have thought to "price shop" for postage honestly! I mean, the postage rate is what it is and the invite weighs what it weighs, how can the price be different at a different location? Makes no sense. The only reason we realized it was because my Dad originally took an invitation for me one afternoon to find out. It wasn't time to send them out yet, so I procrastinated on buying the stamps. When it was time, I asked him if he remembered the postage amount, he didn't, and offered to run it to the post office again while he was out running errands. He happened to be near a different post office that day...and so began that debacle.

I purposely picked a simple invite that was sure to ship with regular postage. Then I got inspired and added a lace and a bling center similar to yours and that upped my postage, so I decided not to splurge cause I think most end up being thrown away anyways. Its a matter of preference and again if you want to pay the difference.

    BTW your invites look pretty

Beautiful invitation! Sorry to hear you had postage shock.

I have a stamps.com membership so I weighed my envelopes & printed postage at home. I paid $.76 for each invitation, plus the regular postage of $.48 for each RSVPs. Total $1.24. The rhinestone and pearl embellishments on my invites is what caused me to go over the regular postage price for the invitation, but it was not as much as I had expected.

When I went to the post office they weighed and measured my invites, and got the exact same price that I did at home.

To mail the invitation it was .75 based on the weight. Including the RSVP card of .47, total cost was $1.22 per invite. It never occurred to me to check around to see if the cost was the same post office to post office. That's a little scary that the prices change.

Thats awesome you have a stamps.com membership and were able to do it all from home @Debra. Not a bad price all together for both envelopes @Debra @Audrey.

@FutureMrs.RPerez they definitely do end up in the trash. I am a product of what happens when you look at to much stationary on pinterest and instagram and you want to do alot of stuff. I have seen some beautiful simple invites!

@beautyofdreams I had to come off my Pintest Cloud fast lol it was like a crash landing... pinterest vs. reality check. My head was inflated with so much and then had to realize it was not all feasible in our budget. but regardless, we do what we can and it will all come together beautifully.

Those invitations are very pretty! oh well....what can you do. You may have regretted not having the invitation more than the pricey postage.

I wanted to keep it simple so my postage per invitation is .94 (including the return response card)

We used postcards for our Save the Dates to save even more! (.35 vs .47)

I know it's not much....but it adds up when you have over 150 people invited! =)

Mine all had a Forever stamp on them. Easy, cheap, and spent $16 mailing everything out.

We mailed boxed invitations, over 3 years ago, and I think they were $2.24 each. My Mom took them to a small post office near us, and they were able to hand cancel them. We only had to mail 50, to those who lived out of the area. We and our parents see the other guests (100 boxes), at least monthly, so we handed them out personally. So glad we did as one box completely disappeared and another took 8 days to travel a 2-hour drive.

We used our wedding website, for online responses, so we didn't have to buy the return envelopes, or pay for stamps for them.

Mine are $0.86 but to send them to Colombia they are $2.46 a piece. And then you have to put in the stamps for the RSVP....Luckily the ones in Colombia I am having them email us because its easier and I can't buy stamps in Colombia!

I spent $204.25 to send out my STDs and invites. I definitely didn't realize that it would end up being that much. Oh well.
