Post Office Fail

Lacy, on October 31, 2018 at 10:32 PM Posted in Planning 0 16
We mailed our invitations earlier this week and got one of them delivered to us yesterday. We thought maybe insufficient postage even though we had them weighed and everything was right. My FH stopped by the post office today to see what was up and apparently somehow it was interpreted that our address on the back (stamped above where the envelope seals) was where the mail was to be delivered. You can see the cancellation stamp on both sides of the envelope. 🤔

I have no idea how because the delivery address is massive on the front with just the little stamp on the back lol. Plus, it's the back. 😂 They're supposed to be delivering it correctly this time (going to check with the guest to make sure) but I've never heard of this happening! At least it was an easy fix and it came back to us!

I know it is common with wedding stationary to put the return address on the back of the envelope but when it goes through the sorters it can get misread. The USPS recommendations call for the return address to be on the front. I really wish invitation websites would get with the program, they are the ones who failed.

Ours were labeled the traditional way and people who live like 30 mins way from us didn’t get theirs for about 3 weeks but people who live in other states got then in days🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️ It’s annoying! Lol

Oh no! Our invites from Minted came pre-addressed with our address on the back above the seal! Hope we don't run into this issue too!

Oh man! Before I mailed my STDs I went to the post office to weigh and specifally asked if I could put my return address stamp on the back flap (to avoid this problem) and they said “no problem!” I haven’t had any returned to me and it sounds like most people are receiving them but yikes!

Does anyone know if you take them in to get hand cancelled if this would avoid the problem?

    Good to know!

You can always ask for things to be hand cancelled or hand sorted. You'll probably get a groan out of it, but it's the best way to guarantee this doesn't happen.

And if you have a dark envelope, definitely get it hand cancelled!

I just don't understand how this could have been confused smh. Shame on USPS for not knowing the difference!
I'm thinking of addressing my invitations the same way, oh boy!

It’s not the USPS though. It’s their mail sorter machines. The machine doesn’t read the difference between the front and back of the envelopes. This is why the USPS recommends return addresses go on the front. Then the machine will sort it properly.

Yikes what a total fail on their part! Our envelopes were addressed the same way and we had no issues. Hope they get it right this time for you!

They actually were hand cancelled! We had wax seals and we asked for it. They told us since they were a smaller local office they do all the mail that way. It was weird because the canceling stamp was on both sides. Oh well, things happen lol.

I'm so sorry this happened! However, I suppose it's a lesson learned for all of us! In a way, I thank you for showing me what NOT to do haha.
