Possible 10 yr old Best Man?

Richie, on February 20, 2013 at 9:59 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 5

I'm considering making my 10 yr old nephew my Best Man, a 2nd Best Man, Groomsman, or Junior Groomsman. Should his age limit any of these considerations because of the responsibilities he would have? Should I be concerned with how this would work in the order of the procession? Has anyone heard of a 10 yr old Best Man?

He may not be best suited for the role of best man due to the obligations that the best man is responsible for, but a groomsman or junior groomsman would be a great way to include him if he plays an important role in your life.

The role of the best man, first and foremost, is to be someone who is truly special to you to stand by your side and serve as a witness to #1 the most special time of your life and #2 sign your marriage license stating that he did witness the exchange of vows and rings. So if this 10 yr old is special to you and can sign his name, understanding that he is signing to say he saw you take your vows then he is qualified. Any of the other "rituals" are not a requirement of best man duties. Bachelor parties and such came long after the institution of marriage. As for the speech, if he is comfortable doing it, maybe someone could help him to write it. I bet he'd do a great job because he would feel so important. I say go for it! I think it's a beautiful gesture. What great pics you'd have too! Best of luck.

I agree that he may not be best suited for that position, but its your call. Do you feel comfortable having him as BM? Do you feel like he's responsible enough for the role, or would he need extra guidance on the big day?

Also, something to keep in mind - depending on the state you're getting married in, he may not be old enough to be the listed witness on the marriage license.

If your state requires witness signatures on the marriage license, he most likely will not be legally able to do that as most/all require the signatory to be of legal age (18 yrs old).
