Jenni G., on September 5, 2009 at 4:12 PM Posted in Planning 0 21

I found this today.. it's pretty awesome in the explanation. I mean ultimately we want to look AMAZING on our day.. and I was worried I wouldn't due to my "fatty" status. I found this and I looove it! There's examples and etc.. I hope no one's offended, as I can just about promise, I'm the biggest girl on here!

No matter what size or shape a girl is, there are flattering and unflattering ways of photographing her. A good photographer should be very familiar with the techniques and guide you along in posing and body positioning.

Something else in this article that I found really really important that a bride can control is the mention of dress fit. The author talked about how to cover up a bad fitting dress. There's no reason to wear a bad fitting dress and yet so many brides do that! No matter how large or small you are, you should not be folding out over top the dress, front or back. Nothing makes a girl look bigger than she is than ill-fitted clothing of any kind. So ladies the important lesson here is to make sure your alterations are PERFECT and the cut of your dress is flattering to your shape.

Thanks for the post, this is fantastic information!!!!!

A while back you mentioned finding good shapewear....do you mind me asking where you found it and/or what style you purchased?

Forgive me for being the kill joy here....first off our photographer can't spell and he wants this to be an educational tool...hmmmm. As a plus size bride I am not offended by you posting it but I am offended at his stance. If you notice, his focus is to cut the bride....no my bad excuse me "the subject" by covering her with a cake, her husband, her parents etc. I agree with Laura when she says that if you know what you are doing there should be no problem. He seems to assume that plus size brides all wear ill-fitting dresses and will have packets of fat hanging out of the dress....oh and that blurry mess he calls art at the bottom by cutting the bride in half with the camera? I am the first to be critical of myself but I am who I am and if the photographer needs to reduce me to parts to make what he considers an acceptable album then to hell with him. Please ignore this crap and enjoy the beauty God gave you and what you FH sees in you.

HAHA! Well said Libragurl....I was chuckling at some of the stuff he was saying, and certainly not impressed with his examples....but I think if you put it into context of photography tips for ANY girl then it's not so bad...for example when I take a photo with my husband I always tell him to take a half step in front of me so that perspective will make me look smaller, doesn't mean I'm huge and need to be covered by him but hey every little bit helps! LOL...I totally agree that the bad fitting dress comment was misplaced, I've seen that on skinny girls and I've seen plus size brides look perfect, that should be a PSA for EVERYONE! We can all do stuff to enhance our beauty or diminish it.

And OMG the part about actually cropping out half of the bride was ridiculous! Could you imagine if you were cut in half in all your wedding photos so that there was less "area" of you in the photo? wow!

Jenni Lynn, I am tall as well as plus size... think my photographer is not going to have fun taking pictures of me!!! 5'11" and 240 lbs. I CAN'T WAIT Smiley smile)))

I'm even bigger than that... however my point in the information was that I felt I learned from it.. as he said, bottom line it's his job to make his client look good.. it's what sells. I like some of his suggestions and pointers, and I am a self conscious girl.. this made me feel better that it IS possible to see BIG girls looking gorgeous in their photos

Oh Jenni I think it was a great idea that you posted this. I hear from girls all the time that they need to lose weight before they can take "good" pictures and that is just so silly! My favorite clients are the plus sized girls, first because I love curves but also because I love showing them how beautiful they really are! It's too easy for us not to be able to see that in ourselves, being our own worst critics. Your photographer's job is to make you look your best and we do know the angles and whatnot to do just that so don't worry about a thing! We just found some of these particular techniques a bit much, like cutting the bride out of the picture! But I myself use all kinds of tricks every time I pose for a photo to appear slimmer, we all can use a little help. So thanks for sharing this article Jenni!

Jenni I looked at your profile and I think you are very pretty. It is his job to make the client look good but he is not working with a blob of clay that he has to mold into beauty. You have the beauty....so take the pictures. I understand being self conscious....been there all my life.......I don't know maybe I'd feel better if he had posted a " how to guide" for photographing the crackhead thin bride. Would he in opposition say to double the picture so that she looks more meaty? Would he hang a pork chop from her bony arm to create the appearance of flesh? Would he assume that their dresses would be ill-fitted and slide off of them as they strut down the aisle due to a small bust? Ok enough from me....just sayin.

I've always loved the shots from above like the example with the bridemaids. I think it's a fun angle and certainly leads to a no double chin photo without being weird. Any other tips on how to get rid of a double chin? I like his suggestion of putting the veil over the arms--you can see the difference with and without the veil. Standing at an angle to the camera and separating the arms from the body are also common tips for looking thinner. I often crop myself a bit to look a little thinner and make sure I'm not in the front of a picture when that makes that person look the biggest of the group. Plus sized or not (at this point I am a size 14 which would be "plus"), what other techinques are out there for taking 'skinnier' looking photos? We all take photos without the help of a pro and still want to look our best.

Remember, your man loves you, as you are, otherwise he wouldn't be marrying you. To him you are beautiful and when he looks at the pictures, no matter how the pictures are taken or what is covered up, he will see the girl he loves, not someone who is heavy. In the future, when you look at your wedding pictures, you need to see the person your husband sees, the beautiful girl he married.
