Pool party reception ... ruined ...

Niky, on March 30, 2009 at 5:17 PM Posted in Planning 0 4

We were going to have an informal "pool party" reception, about 2 weeks after the wedding, as we're getting married in Puerto Rico on the beach with just a couple immediate family members. It was supposed to be at a condo/townhouse community clubhouse ... only $70/hour for three rooms (one with 2 pool tables, one with big comfy couches and overstuffed charirs, one with 8 dinner tables) and the pool!! It was perfect! Buuuuut, now they're telling us we cannot privately rent the pool until 7pm. It was originally planned for 2-7ish. SO, either we share the pool with the community residents (but keep the inside private, I HOPE!) ... or we go somewhere else. I can imagine people walking inside and stealing our food!! Ahhhh!

We're completely informal and want something cheap, fun, and decently private for about 150 guests!! No dinner and dancing ... and no one's home/backyard will work. Ideas?

(We live in the Chicago suburbs) Thanks!!

Did you sign a rental agreement of some sort? If so then they have to honour it. If not, I would go the manager of the building and see if you could come to some sort of agreement, If they can rent the pool and romms at all, I don't see why they can't be flexible on the hours. Also, Did you put any money down, If you did and decide not to do anything there, make sure they give you your money back!! If all works out and you can have everything rented during those times, I would put up signs saying "Private Function" all over and have everyone keep an eye out for unwanted guests.

The first thing I would ask is what your contract says. If it clearly says you get private use of an area, you can enforce it. But if it doesn't ...

I guess you can try another complex with a pool and make sure you get it in writing this time. July is far enough out you should be able to find something.

Didn't sign the contract yet. In fact, his mother went to drop the contract off for us and they told her then that we cannot have the pool until 7pm. It doesn't specify that in the contract! It just asked what time you'd like things 'till. It isn't our clubhouse, but his Grandmother's. We talked to a couple people already and they won't "bend the rules" for just us.

So, we need a different idea. Smiley sad Whatchya got?!? Smiley smile

My first thought is to say then just adjust the hours of your reception, start it at 6pm have the guests arrive and eat in that first hour and then the pool is all yours that night...in mid summer sun isn't down until 10pm anyway.

It also depends on the complex...the one I lived in (in Streamwood) wasn't really THAT crowded on the weekends - usually 20 - 30 max a day, if that. I'm sure not all your guests will be utilizing the pool (think of your older guests) so if you are concerned about someone stealing your food one of them might make a good "watch dog" for you. Post some signs on the club house door indicating that it's a private party and I think most residents will be respectful of that and stay out.

You could also look into a renting park district pool ~ there are also several companies in the burbs that have pools that they may rent out.

Flick-Reedy Corporation in Bensenville is one I can think of.

    Good Luck!
