Polaroid Guest Book and diy Photo Booth

Official Mrs.K, on December 12, 2018 at 3:27 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 12

I swear I just posted this discussion but it seems to have disappeared so apologies in advance if I somehow have two of these out there. Anyway, here I go again...

Last night my FH and I decided to have a Polaroid Guest Book for our wedding (and yes I am kicking myself that we didn't talk about this BEFORE black Friday to score a deal on the camera). Since our wedding will be outside and we will not have any walls to use as a back drop I was thinking about making one out of piping and fabric. Of course this immediately lead to the thought of "oh I should get some props" and "hmm since we are outside and it will get dark I should also get a light"...so basically I am now at the point of also having a DIY Photo Booth (which FH and I originally wanted but couldn't afford the $700 price tag through a vendor).

My thought was to put the guest book table next to the photo booth so my guests can use props/the backdrop if they want for their Polaroid pictures. Here is my dilemma, the Polaroid film is pretty expensive and I am not planning to purchase the film/camera for the Photo Booth itself. I was thinking the Polaroid would be for the guest book and then guests can use their own cameras for the Photo Booth (aka Selfie Booth). Do you think that would be super confusing to guests? I was hoping to get away with not hiring someone as an attendant and will definitely have signs to explain the guest book. Let me know if you think I can make this work or if you think I would be setting myself up for chaos. LOL

I think if you have them next to each other people will use the Polaroid camera in the "booth" and keep the pictures. I think it's best to separate them so that you dont have to buy sooo much film. To be honest though, the camera might still find it's way over to the photo booth.

I’m not sure what your budget is but have you checked out Groupon for a photo booth? You can get them for a few hundred dollars for 4 hours.

Yeah, you are probably right. I just found a ring light on a small tripod so maybe I just set that up on the Guest Book table to solve for the lighting issue and say screw it with the background..... I would hate to spend the money for the camera and film only to find out that everyone took their pictures home LOL.

That's a good idea Kenisha and one that I had not thought of. We did come under budget a little bit in the DJ category so I will talk to my FH and see if he is open to trying Groupon. Originally it was our DJ who quoted us the $700 for his photo booth (which is actually this really cool VW mini bus that he converted over) but that was just too much.

I feel as though that’d be confusing and people would definitely keep the photos. My cousins wedding was outside and they had a DIY pipe and drape backdrop and just had one of their friends hold the Polaroid and take the pics as soon as the guests walked in. Then me and FH got to sign it and clip it on the tree with a clothespin. We still took our own photos on my phone with the backdrop, but I feel as though people might use the Polaroid for their own pictures of you don’t have someone attending the booth.

Have you checked out Groupon for the Photo Booth? The types of rentals are pretty awesome, and they are pretty cheap!

I just took a look at Groupon and you are right, there are some amazing deals!! The only problem is that they all have a 90 day expiration date and I am just under 5 months out from my wedding. Guess I will probably place this on hold for a couple months and then check back to see how the deals are once I am in the 90-day window.

A few suggestions on a few different things...

    1) Check Groupon for deals on Polaroid film! I ordered a pack of 50 sheets for $35 a few days ago which is definitely better than in stores

    2) Just to make you feel better, I knew I wanted a Polaroid before Black Friday/cyber Monday, and I checked like every possible site and they weren’t discounted ANYWHERE. Was super disappointing. So i don’t think you missed out on any deals because I seriously think I scoured the whole internet lol.

    3) For your photo booth, look into a selfie stick tripod. You can get them on amazon for like $10. They prop up a phone/iPod on the tripod, and have a Bluetooth control to click to take pictures. You could either have guests plug in their own phones and use the tripod, or you could even just leave your or FH’s phone up there to be used for photobooth pictures since I doubt you’ll be using your phones anyway!

The last wedding I went to did a polaroid guest book.

They used their arbor from their ceremony for guests to take pictures with, which I thought was a smart recycling of ceremony decor.

Anyway, a lot of people failed to understand the point of the polaroid camera being there for the guest book, which is its own problem. But there were also a lot of people using the camera and taking the polaroids with them home. I could definitely see your guests using the polaroid camera for personal use.

As someone who uses a Polaroid camera often, it is VERY pricey. 1 pack of 10 photos is $20.... and you would need multiple packs. Then if you don't already own a Polaroid camera, that's another expense that could run upwards of $40.

My suggestion is to purchase a bunch of disposable cameras. You could put a sign on the prop/camera table that says "Welcome to our selfie booth! Grab a prop and snap some fun photos on these nifty disposable cameras! We promise to share these fun photos with you once they're developed" Then you can upload digital scans/copies of the photos in the weeks after the wedding.
