Plus Sized Dresses Cost More?

Shalott, on May 5, 2016 at 6:29 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 51

I know this is completely petty and totally my fault but I'm really upset about my dress. I am getting a custom dress made that I designed from a designer that came super recommended on etsy. I was hesitant to go online but my dress budget is so tiny that I really had no other choice if I wanted the dress I like. We discussed in detail all the design elements and I ended up paying $433 (I know, I know. It's not a lot. But it's a lot to me) I sent her my measurements on Monday and she just came back and told me she was going to have to charge me an extra $55 because I'm plus size. I can probably swing the extra money but I feel like I shouldn't out of principle. Am I being a brat? Should I just suck it up and fork over the money?

I think, unfair as it is, it's common to be charged more if you're "plus size". I would imagine it's due to extra fabric needed. You could certainly ask her to explain the charge before you pay it. Sorry !

Normally, more materials equals more costs. There was a thread earlier about negotiating on Etsy and users being pretty successful. You can try to see if she'll go down on the price. If not, I'd just pay it.

I'd pay it. Larger size means more material. Material costs money.

Yeah, plus-sized clothing does often cost more. If this is a custom dress, then pay it- more materials, more time, etc.

I actually don't think it's all about the material. There's a bigger difference between a size 0 and a size 10 than there is between a 10 and 16, but size 10 dresses don't usually cost more than zeros.

Maybe a dress needs to be cut differently for plus size figures, so there might be more labour involved? I don't know.

My dress ONLY comes in plus size, so I just paid the regular price for it.

I also vote to pay it because of the additional material,

I've heard of this before. My mother's gown for our wedding is an additional $30 because it's a larger size. I always assumed it had to do with extra fabric.

Maybe it is the cut/labor. I know when I order shirts through work, plus sizes are always a few bucks extra.

Idk I think it's weird. I mean, I don't get a discount being a size 0 when that's less material and labor why should you have to pay for plus size? (I'm not a wedding dress size 0 but for arguments sake). If she posted on her page that she makes dresses sizes 0-12 and you asked her for 16 then I can see why she would ask for more. Do most designers charge for plus size?

Unfortunately it's normal. My dad is a very large man and buying clothes for him is ridiculously expensive.

As pp have said, I wouldn't take offense to it. I think this is pretty common. They're most likely using more materials so it'll cost them more to make. I seriously doubt they saw your measurements and decided to tack on an extra $55.

Additional material, additional sewing, additional time. $55 more isn't too much at least. if you were at a bridal salon they'd probably be charging more. look on the bright side, you're getting a custom one of a kind dream gown for a 'reasonable' price!

It's true that there's more difference between a 0 and a 10 than a 10 and a 16 but generally costs of production are calculated as an overall average. So dressmakers would make less money on a size 10 dress, but there's less fabric thus more profit for 0s and 2s. Overall, if they make a size 0, a size 6 and a size 10 dress over the course of a few months, they are profiting. So to add $55 for a size they don't usually make (and isn't factored into their overhead costs) makes sense.

Is it stated anywhere on her shop that plus size dresses are an additional fee?

Just so you know it is not only plus size that has to pay extra but I had to pay for extra length because I am 5'10 and the dress would have been too short. It is annoying but if it makes it look and fit better it is worth it.

Yeah I've seen it many places - unfortunately due to the additional material and labor it is more.. Definitely a lot of other details you could dwell on. I say bite the bullet and work on the next thing on your check list - if you love the dress so it'll be worth it Smiley smile

That isn't surprising. Businesses price dresses based on what the materials are going to cost, how much time it will take to make, and any other business expenses incurred, leaving a margin for profit. With a larger dress, it will cost more to produce so in order to keep the profit margin she is increasing the price. This is totally normal. To keep prices somewhat even and not have a different price for every size, I would imagine that she bases her normal price on the average size sold, and probably makes a higher profit on a size zero dress than a size 10 dress. But the size 10 dress is still profitable, when the dress size goes up beyond that it loses its profitability therefore the prices needs to be increased.

I understand this completely. I had to order a size 22 for my dress because of my bust. Mind you I was a size 16. Now that my first fitting is coming Ill have to pay a gang of money to get it altered due to weight loss.

Don't worry they will alter it to you and you will look beautiful.
