Plus size dress trying fears

Harmony, on February 8, 2020 at 3:03 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 15
Hi ladies! I have struggled with weight my whole life. I’m sooo nervous, maybe scared, to try on dresses because of my size.
Any brides have any tips on dress shopping as a plus size bride??

I️ highly suggest Azazie!! They have tons of beautiful plus size dresses and the reviews are amazing. You can “try before you buy” which is an amazing feature for an online shop. I’m getting my dream dress from them and the prices are so unbelievably amazing.

There are no tips for you as you are no different than any other bride. I would suggest go dress shopping in person just to see what style fits you best. I am a curvy one and for me I know certain silhouettes do not work with my butt and hips lol. Listen to the stylist as two places told me to accentuate my waist so they can guide you on which route to go. You got this and you will find the right dress. I will say A-line and ball gown are great university silhouettes for any figure.

So, I can say that as a curvy bride I did have experiences at both a private salon and David's Bridal. The private salon I went to was nice, but the consultant I had was a little uppity and a little over it. Plus the few samples they did have were nice but nothing that really fit. I would set your first appointment up with David's Bridal. They have TONS of samples in the curvy range, so you're bound to have something you can at least look at. Different David's will have a different atmosphere too though, so if you don't like the first one try another. I went to three - one the lady pressured me to buy AND left me alone for most of the appointment, the last one the lady took time to make sure I was comfortable and never forced me.

Try on a little of everything, especially in the beginning. Take lots of pictures of things you love, front and back. And sleep on it! Make a comeback appointment for the next day and make sure you don't spring for something in the moment. Too many brides on here go through three or four dresses - I was one of them - because of aggressive sales pitches. Some samples may not fit, most will. Just breath and take in the dress as a whole. You'll know when they zip you into the right dress. Nothing else will compare.

I found it helpful to try on several styles and be open to anything. The dresses I loved online (and thought would look good or hide things I didn't like) ended up looking terrible on me. Once I found my dress I cried because I finally felt beautiful in myself and not just a fat girl trying to fit into a beautiful dress. Good luck!

Call a few local bridal shops too, several now do carry designer gowns in plus size!

Hi. I live in Chicago and am a plus lady. When calling the salon to book appointment, ask if they have a variety of plus size dresses. I found one who turn her nose up immediately so I didn’t bother. The first place I went was plus only (Brides by Young). I also went to sample stores and boutiques plus David’s. I preferred the non-chain boutiques as David’s attention was minimal. The place I went (the 6th place) had plus size. The dress I tried on was a 12 and I’m a 20. You can’t be too modest. Try on more than what you think will look best. I bought a style that I didn’t think I’d look good in. You also have to picture in your head how it will look with the right undergarments. Not thrilled with my flabby arms so I am letting photographer know.

I would go to a shop that specializes in plus size gowns or at least call local shops to make sure they have plenty of plus size samples available. The salon I went to was specifically sizes 14+ and all of the consultants were curvy, so the try on process was much more comfortable.

The best tips I can give, as a plus sized bride myself, are to wear bike shorts so you aren't completely naki in front of the stylist. It helped my comfort a lot. Try on all styles, not just what you think you can wear. Don't be afraid to try something daring. I personally think it's not helpful to bring a bunch of people. I brought 1 person.

David's Bridal has a decent selection of plus size dresses. I'm a plus size bride. I got my dress at David's Bridal. My consultant was wonderful.

Honestly I was nervous too!! I’ve always been nervous about my body in most situations. I know it’s hard but my best advice is to just go in and have a good time! No one is there to judge you they want you to find what you love and what you love to see yourself in (if they did then that definitely isn’t the salon for you!). I went in with such an open mind, I mean I knew what I mostly liked (like the silhouette) and what was a hard pass for me but even if I thought I wouldn’t like it or didn’t like it on the model or the hanger I was like I’ll try it! There was one or two I was like nope i don’t even want to go out and show it lol. And don’t worry about the size ! Most of the time the sizes aren’t going to fit you, weather your smaller or bigger, the sample sizes are all over the place and also dress sizes are so much smaller than your normal clothes size. The sample size isn’t going to fit you perfectly until you have your right size and alterations anyway so either way it might look a little off no matter the sizes with all the clips and cloth all on the back. No matter what you’ll know what dress is yours and what you feel beautiful in! Also wear spandex or biker shorts if you don’t want to be just undergarments in the dressing room with your stylist.

I was so scared to go bridal dress shopping, but it was the most wonderful experience! I went to Brides by Young, which is a plus sized bridal boutique and it was amazing! If you are nervous, I highly recommend finding a plus sized shop. It was so fun seeing everything in the shop and knowing I fit into every single dress.
