Plus size bridesmaid dresses

Julie, on December 4, 2016 at 12:22 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 20

I have 7 bridesmaids and a couple of them are considered "plus size". Finding stores that have samples that they can try on has been very difficult. I'm doing mix/match dresses so the girls want to see what their options look like. These women are truly a normal/average size! It is such a poor experience, and makes some of my most favorite ladies feel bad.

I just don't understand why all of these stores only carry one size sample. Is this normal or is it just the places we are shopping? I looked at stores in NY, NJ, MD. Are there any stores that are better about this? I'm just wondering if this is a larger problem, or if we have just had bad luck. Is this a big issue with actual bridal dresses as well? Thanks!

I was in CA, and I had a similar problem. One of my bridesmaids was perfectly the sample size. One was so skinny and tall that nothing hung right, and the other was wide enough that nothing zipped. I wish stores carried more sizes, because it's demeaning to be the "wrong size" and not be able to try on anything.

Oh dear... Well for wedding dress shopping, 2/3 stores I have been to so far carried more than enough selection for me to try on as a size 16/18. So stores that cater to that do exist! I'm hoping David's bridal is one of them, because that is where I was planning on going for the bridesmaids dresses.

David's Bridal actually was the only place that had a variety of sample dresses. I was not a big fan of the selection though. One dress I found we all loved, but it was being discontinued. That's another issue we've had... a few dresses we liked and tried on were being discontinued.

    David's has a good amount in plus-sized.

If you're willing to go online, let me recommend Eshakti.com -you can have all the dresses tailor made there - lengths, necklines, sizes, etc. I'm plus-sized, and I get almost all of my work clothes from them, and a couple of fancier dresses.

I found that locally owned bridal shops had more variety. I have several plus sized bridesmaids and that was our experience.

I did mine at David's Bridal. They had a wide selection. I went with the same dress for all my BM. They had this beautiful mesh halter dress that goes with all body types and you can do the halter 30 different ways so my BM can still have a unique look of their choice. Hope you find a store that is more helpful.

I personally think that when you have girls of a variety of sizes that David's Bridal is the best place to go, but this is also because I had a really bad experience when I went to a smaller boutique and got a dress when I was heavier than I am now. When I went to pick out dresses with the bride and other bridesmaids, none of the samples fit me, and then the size that I was measured was in the designer's plus size range, and it cost me $50 extra for the dress (already $200 so I had to pay $250) and the whole experience was really embarrassing. It could have also been the way that the sales women handled it, but I'll never forget it.

I work at a bridal shop, and I can honestly tell you that we are at the mercy of the designers. Whatever size they get, is the size we have to take if we want that sample. That being said, some designers run better than others. I'd maybe say try bill levkoff or sorella vita since they run a little bit larger and tend to ship more variety of sizes. Have you tried bella bridesmaids?

A lot of the stores we went to had super small samples too and my bigger bridesmaids couldn't try them on. We ended up ordering a dress that should be flattering on everyone without them trying it on.

ETA: ours is a sorella vita

I've had problems with finding one of my bridesmaids whose plus size a dress. There wasn't any dresses her size to try on to see what size and style fit her best.

Like everyone else is saying, David's Bridal is the way to go if you want everyone to be able to actually try stuff on.
