Plus One without Inner Invitation Envelope

Ingrid, on May 15, 2021 at 10:29 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 7

Our invitations do not have an inner envelope where typically you would add "& Guest" so the recipient knows they get a plus one. I don't want to crowd the mailing envelope with "& Guest". How would you indicate a plus one is allowed?

Put it on their RSVP card or website.

I thought about it on the RSVP card but what if you don't know the name of the Guest? I want to use this info for the seating chart as well.

I gave up on the website since I forgot to pay the additional year before it expired. I tried to get it reactivated but WW told me it wasn't possible, which is feel is not right, but whatever.

Aside from reaching out to each person to ask the name of their date, I don't see any other way other than writing and guest or "John's" guest.

Write smaller on the envelope to fit. Plus list on the reply card. If you don’t know the random strangers’ names, you call each of your guests. Significant others are not plus ones and are listed by name, again by calling your guests before invites go out.

I don’t think it will crowd the outer envelope, especially since for couples you’re writing two names anyway.

My outer envelopes are very stylized and definitely didn’t have room to add “& guest” and I’m not using inner envelopes. For most of my guests I am doing online RSVPs directly through our wedding website, so for those guests that get a plus one and I don’t know the name I wrote for example, “Dylan’s guest,” in the first name last name section. I plan on either reaching out myself or having my FH reach out (depending on who’s side of the guest list the person is on) once those guests have been confirmed to get their name for the seating chart and place cards.

My thought process is that if the person bringing a guest is close enough to us to be invited to our wedding, at least one of us should be comfortable with reaching out and getting details for their guest 🤗😅 I’ve been to a few weddings with seating charts that just leave people as ex., “Dylan’s guest,” and it always rubs me the wrong way - I’d rather have wrong name written down if there’s a last minute switch compared to a generic “ ‘s guest” name.

Forgot to mention physical reply cards 😅 (we did a few but none had plus-ones). I would make sure there’s a section on your reply cards that indicates how many guests are associated with that card, like the _/2 section, to indicate that the person named on the outer envelope is allowed to bring a guest. If the main guest doesn’t write the guest’s name of the name line then I would reach out to get an exact name.
