plum vs purple...help...

Crystal L., on April 19, 2015 at 9:43 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 23

I've done a bunch of research online, and seen all the color shade samples online, as we are out in the middle of nowhere, and I don't really have a store or anything to see actual swatches of fabric. I've been trying to find out if I want to order plum table runners or purple table runners for our wedding, and can't figure out what the difference is. It may sound ridiculous...lol, but does anyone have any idea how to tell the difference, and/or real life pictures of plum and/or purple things to compare. I'm lost...LOL

I would say you are on point with plum being darker. Plum is darker and richer than a true purple.

I would say maybe try looking at Pantone Colors to find a shade of purple you like, or something simpler might be to get some paint swatches from a store like Home Depot to compare.

It's so close, but IMO, plum is darker.

Plum is definitely darker. Like the color of an actual plum. Purple is lighter. Think of the dinosaur Barney lol

Plum technically has proportionately more red than blue with a very slight greyish tint it's definitely richer and more sophisticated than a true purple. The only problem is you can't really guarantee that what's being listed is really true to the color name they give it (I've seen things listed as plum that were closer to eggplant and things listed as purple with either too much red or blue to be a true purple). The only way to be sure is to see it in person, or photographs at the very least if you can get them.

The problem is that colors aren't really standardized. Each maker or seller could be vastly different in their labels of purple or plum.

This is usually my first thought when I think of plum, https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/fe/e1/6e/fee16eff1309d982864b1a67ab4891ac.jpg

But there is no across the board standard.

You really need to see swatches and decide on which company you like, i have found that purples have been the hardest because many times they will use the same names for slightly different shades. usually Plum will be darker than purple.

    my favorite shade is aubergine.

here is a good color chart of purples i found

@Brianna...the Barney comment made me giggle! =D

@714HBBride the nearest Home Depot, or any store, for that matter, is an hour drive from our house, which is why I've been looking at colors mostly online! =)

I'm looking for a darker, dusty type purple, and thought that's what plum was, but apparently not...LOL

But if that's not an option I agree with the paint swatch suggestion, or decide if you're looking for something richer (plum) or brighter (purple).

ETA: Try to find a store online that allows you to order samples or swatches, they're definitely out there.

Type in purple in the pantone color search above, it will give you a ton of options to look at. I agree with previous poster above though. Purple is a hard color, one of the major things that you will find is that people use the same names for shades that are completely different than what you think that color is. Without seeing a sample of the actual product that you want you are taking a gamble. But not everything has to match 100%!

If the site doesn't let you order swatches, DB has them for a dollar

You can always order color swatches from most places also! Smiley smile Even bridesmaid dress vendors will send color swatched. Hope this helps!

Plum is darker. You can stop by David's Bridal and take a look at the different shades of purple swatches

Sweetie...order a sample if you can and pick the one you like best. If you are crunched for time, just take the plunge and stick with it. The difference between plum and purple will be negligible on your wedding day. In fact...they could be lime green with polka dots and you may not notice and/or care. It's your wedding day. Purple vs. plum will not be an issue.

Please trust me on this. Enjoy yourself in planning because it's all gooooood! : )

Plum is a much darker shade of purple. It's the color of my BM dresses. Not sure if a photo will help, but this is them in plum.
