Playlist or Dj?

Jess, on January 8, 2020 at 4:48 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 11

Debating between making a playlist using spotify or hiring a DJ. Spotify lets us choose the songs we want and make sure we don't have songs we don't like and is cheaper, but would a DJ help more with the overall experience? We also have a friend who is more than willing to be our MC and keep the playlist going. Help!

We had a playlist and my husband’s best man MC’d and changed up the songs sometimes. It went over really well!

Awesome! Thanks for your feedback! Did you have any awkward pauses between songs? That's something I'm worried will kill the mood before the next song can play.

I can’t remember any awkward pauses so I’m guessing this wasn’t an issue because if it was I’d probably remember it 😂 so if there were pauses, they weren’t long enough to notice.

Just make sure your friend is reading the room and noticing what songs people respond well to. We actually ended up going rogue from the playlist after about 30 mins, and the best man and I were just alternating choosing songs based on how we felt and what we thought people would like hahaha. Definitely make a playlist but don’t be afraid to ditch it if it’s not going over well.

We’re doing a dj. I found one for $450 for 6 hours so i can’t complain . But I also don’t wanna deal with adding the songs when our dj could just do everything for us . Plus since he’s dj so many I feel he would know what to get everyone dancing too

Knowing what get's everyone moving is what makes me consider a DJ, I just don't want a situation like my FMIL had where their DJ played the wrong song for their first dance and had "forgot" to tell them he didn't have the song they requested. He also played songs they specifically asked to not be played. I'm just so nervous! Either option could go wrong

I think it really depends on the vibe you’re going for. If it’s more low key, a playlist should work great. If you really want a dance party, I think a DJ is important. I will say I feel like my DJ was instrumental to the success of our day, and it was great to not have to waste any time thinking about playlists or worrying about the dance floor day of

We had a friend MC and used Spotify and no one noticed. If you want it to be like a crazy dance party maybe you’d need a DJ but other than that no one cares it it only cost us $100 (we gifted him as a thank you)

I'm in the same debate because we dont have a party, dancing family. At least I don't think we do. And we certainly aren't party, dancing people. There's also only 75 people, mostly immediate family at our wedding. So we're going for chill, dinner and conversation type reception and using a playlist with one of my FH's cousins (whose siblings are bith in the wedding party) to manage it. We have a photobooth, great food, and a museum to tour (the venue!) instead of dancing.

For us, we have a DJ (my godfather) and he is amazing at what he does. Our families (especially mine) love to dance, and it is super important that we had a DJ to keep the flow of the wedding going. However, we did toy with the idea of having a playlist and an MC and I feel like it would have worked regardless, but we decided to go with the DJ.

A DJ really keeps the flow of the reception going. They are also professionals and know the right songs to play to get your guests engaged in what is going on. If you want to have a fun, party like vibe with dancing, I would highly recommend hiring a DJ.

The dj keeps the flow going, has a mike and can announce or sometime even direct people. I am going dj.
