Playlist for interracial reception...help

Cheryl&rock, on August 2, 2018 at 11:25 PM Posted in Planning 0 9
My FH is black, and myself obviously white if it's interracial...lol

We are both in our 60's. So a lot of our guests will be of the oldies music and older. The other's are from 19 to late 50's and mid 60's.

My FH has a very large family. His side will be 2/3 rds if the guests

My side is not really into R&B or Soul music. They are more the newer music and country.
I love oldies and R&B. My FH has a very diverse music appreciation. I want everyone to enjoy the music and to dance.

So I post this question.... HOW THE HECK DO I DO THIS????

Maybe add a song suggestion slot in your RSVPs. That may help with the diversity.

A really good DJ will be able to sort this out for you. Along with your suggestions, they should add a well-rounded knowledge of ALL types of genres and be able to cater to not only multi cultural crowds but various ages as well. Good luck!

I keep forgetting that I don't have to do it all. I have the songs for the ceremony procession, bridal party (Better Today by Coffey Anderson), bride, me, (I Chose You by Ryann Darling), exit song, (Happy by Pharrell Williams), Entry to reception forming a Soul Train Line with bridal party, (Feeling by Justin Timberlake).
I also have sounds I'm dedicating to my three grown married children.
    After that... Blank!!! Lol
Thank you for the information about a good DJ/MC.

I thought of that. If I did that should I ask for one or two songs?
    It's a 4 hour reception plus a 40 minute cocktail hour.

I am in the camp that good music is good music and I'm sure your families will be ok with a good dj.

I was recently at 2 predominantly white weddings recently and was surprised at just how similar song choices to my black family gatherings. Some line dances, Cha Cha slide, wobble, seem to be popular. Shout can be fun. Whitney Houstons I want to dance with somebody is a good one. Queen and Bruno Mars has a big play list, despacito. I think motown and acts like earth wind and fire (September) could be played and universally accepted.

    Please don't play Sweet Caroline.

We're adding a "i promise to dance if you play x" on the rsvp card. One person did this and guests were chatting when their song was played and it was a nice touch.

I want some Alicia Keys, Whitney Houston etc for female vocalists, Charlie Wilson, Temptations, Whispers, etc for male, then a variety of line dance, Cha Cha music etc. I love Motown!!!

Just one song per RSVP should be good. If you provide the list to your DJ, they should be able to figure out the general tastes of your guests, as well as be able to read the crowd.

I'd talk with your DJ and explain the situation. You could also put a song request on your website or RSVP card. Good luck!

I think you you hit the nail on the head with your first sentence. You have enough decisions to make you don't have to worry sweat the small stuff.

You can tell DJ to really mix up the music and take requests. You also might be surprised by your guests! There are some big songs that everyone knows and will dance to even if it's not their favorite type of music.
