Platinum E-ring and white gold wedding band?

Kimberly, on August 27, 2020 at 5:56 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 18
I’m struggling on a decision for my wedding band. My engagement ring is a very simple solitaire in platinum. I love that FH got it in platinum because it is much more durable than white gold. However when looking at bands I’m really having a difficult time justifying the price of platinum. I want a fairly simple band with just a little detail to it. I really like this one....

Simple to match my engagement ring but gives just a little contrast. The one above is white gold and it is about $300 while the platinum similar design is $700. Any recommendations or advice on this? This is my engagement ring. Platinum E-ring and white gold wedding band? 2
I want a simple band with just a little texture or contrast to it.

I would go with a platinum one because honestly something you’re wearing forever so you would rather have something that’s better quality

I would go with platinum because, while they look very similar, the differences in shine are more noticable when right up against each other.

The weddings rings were the one thing that my fiance and I decided to go with the options we liked best and (mostly) ignore the price (obviously within reason). Our justification was that we'll be wearing these for the rest of our lives, so might as well buy the exact ones we want. If the platinum one is the one you like best, and if it's in your price range, go for it!

It’s the price that’s getting me. We are paying for our wedding 100% ourselves. So another $700+ is going to be hard. Is it weird to go into it thinking we can upgrade the band in the future? Is that not something you do?

The white gold ring will have to be replated every few years so that is something to consider.

FH and I are also paying for everything ourselves. We decided to get what’s in our budget now and maybe upgrade down the road. I get the “you’ll wear this forever” aspect of it, but I’m not a big jewelry person so I couldn’t justify hundreds of dollars. Both of us would rather put our money towards experience over stuff.
However, I do agree that white gold and platinum next to each other could be noticeable different. Could you try on rings at a local jeweler and see what you think? In our area they are open by appointment, not sure where you’re at. I’m weird about mixing metals, so it would bother me personally if there was a noticeable difference.

I would 100% go with platinum (if you can afford it). I also have a platinum engagement ring (it was my grandmother's ring), and we went to 6 local jewelers when shopping for our wedding bands. Every single jeweler we went to warned us about the dangers of mixing metals with a platinum engagement ring in the mix, because gold is softer than platinum. Now I'm sure they were also more than happy to sell us the (more expensive) platinum wedding band, but I'm really glad that we went with the platinum to match because now I don't have to worry about my rings bumping up against each other and causing damage.

I’m the same with experiences over stuff. Yes, we will go ring shopping and see how they look together for sure.

Right. I’ve looked a little and it appears the cost is fairly minimal to have it replated. I could be wrong about that though.

My sister has a platinum engagement solitaire and both her wedding bands (yeah she got 2) are white gold. We don’t see a difference in white when you put them all together, but she isn’t intending on wearing all 3 at the same time. She’s got a simple 14k white gold band for work, a diamond eternity 14k white gold band for special occasions and her platinum engagement ring.

Do what makes you happy Smiley smile you can always upgrade later on.

That’s good to know that you don’t see the difference. That was my thought that we could upgrade it in a couple of years. We are just spending so much money right now I can’t justify so much for my ring. Especially when the ring he wants is about $75.

I would definitely stick with platinum. White gold is basically yellow gold mixed with other white metals to give it that white-ish color but it still has a yellow tinge. That's why pretty much all white gold jewelry is rhodium plated to achieve that shiny bright white metal you see in jewelry stores. Brand new it is comparable to platinum but over time, the rhodium plating wears off revealing the yellow-ish white gold.

You would have to get your ring replated every year or so if you want it to look similar to your engagement ring (assuming you will wear it every day)
Platinum is naturally a white metal and doesn't tarnish or change color but over time with wear, it takes on a more textured finish aka patina. I have rings in 18k white gold and platinum that I've had for a while and there's a very distinct difference between the two side by side. I would personally not want to be bothered with the maintenance to keep my eng ring and wedding band looking similar. If you think that would bother you, it's worth investing in the platinum band IMO.

I understand completely! It is a lot of money, and not splurging on the ring now is fine. You can always upgrade later. We spent a lot on my wedding band, and since covid I haven’t worn my engagement ring or band. I ended up buying a simple band a month ago to wear that cost less than 10% of what my wedding band cost!
Who knows, maybe you’ll buy your wedding band and realize you don’t want to wear the engagement ring as much and would rather take it out for special occasions. And I know everyone is warning you about the color change with white gold wear and tear, but what’s more important is if it ultimately does or doesn’t bother you.

I would go with the same metal as your engagement ring. Even with white gold I'm learning there are different platings and color variations, which is so frustrating in trying to find a wedding band that matches my engagement ring.

Unless you're someone who works "hard" with your hands, I'd stick with white gold, but before buying ANY ring, I'd try it out in person with your current ring. I can't tell you how many rings I thought would look good with my engagement ring only to be deeply disappointed. Try it in person and don't be afraid to try styles you wouldn't have chosen otherwise. Definitely listen to your sales person, they know what will look good / best.

Yep that’s our plan, to go look and try rings on. I told FH that I like that one ring in pictures but may hate it in person or on my finger. Thanks!
