Plated vs stations: which goes quicker?

Michelle, on March 14, 2021 at 2:51 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 13

So many posts say that plated meals take forever for guests to be served. While one group is being served, the other has finished eating. The same applies to food trucks that can only serve one at a time. Is this the same in your experience for stations/buffets? As a guest, the only type of full meals at a wedding I have seen were buffets and no one really cared or paid attention because there was no strict timeline to follow either with MC dictating every event. Guests were not made to feel rushed because many were starting to eat as dancing started and didn't mind. But I suppose it depends on how rigid or relaxed your event is. Or did it even matter to you if people didn't finish eating by a certain time?

We’re doing a buffet dinner- there will be a few servers at each station to serve guests. The cost & time of plated meals was our deciding factor.

So we had a combo of plated, buffet and stations. The salad course and dessert were plated. The main meal was buffet and stations. The salad course was served about 10-15 minutes prior to the buffet/stations opening. The buffet/stations really didn't seem to take that long. After dinner, we had cake cutting and then they served the cake. Guests could eat their cake as quickly or slowly as they wanted because it really didn't matter. We also had a candy bar that guests could go to at any point during the reception. An hour before the reception ended, we had a late night snack which was a nacho bar which guests could get as much or as little as they wanted during the last remaining hour as it was self-served. Our wedding was pre-Covid.

As a guest, I can't stand plated meals. They always run overtime, and then as a slow eater I'm very frequently still eating as they are trying to clear plates and move on haha. I like that buffet seems to go quicker, allow for seconds, allow you to eat at your own pace, etc.

I'm very interested in hearing from people who have the opposite preference and why they don't like buffets.

I’ve honestly been to slow plated meals and slow buffets. I think it’s just so hard to ensure a large amount of people all eat at the same time. I still vastly prefer buffets. We had a buffet and it seemed like our small number of guests (around 50) all ate at approximately the same time. Our venue actually charges more for a buffet than a plated meal.

I've actually never had an issue with with pace of plated meals at a wedding. All the weddings I have been to, there were tons of wait staff who brought the food out to tables relatively quickly. I have found slower service with buffets because you are standing in line waiting for people to figure out what they want and get served.

Hmmm as a guest I’ve been to a buffet and plated meals and I don’t know if I’ve ever noticed actually how long it’s taken but I want to say that buffet is cool cause you can go back for more but plated meals are also convenient.

My experience has been the opposite. Most of the weddings I’ve attended were plated meals, with the exception of 4 weddings with stations and 2 with buffets. The weddings with stations and buffets took considerably longer than the plated meals. There was the added time of people having to get up and make their way to the food, then a lot of standing around waiting for your turn, then having to make your way back through the crowd to your seat to eat. Not to mention the people crowding the line and aisles chatting with other guests whose table they were passing or who they saw in the line, slowing things down further. At plated meals, there are an appropriate amount of wait staff to guest ratio in order to ensure people get served very quickly and at nearly the same time (like a group meal at a restaurant). Plus it’s just nice as a guest not having to carry a plate full of food through a crowded room in a fancy dress and heels.

If you are having seated meals, a good venue will have enough servers to adequately serve food in a time appropriate manner.

I personally have never heard of an MC rushing people to eat in accordance with a strict timeline.

At our wedding, we will be having a seated dinner (very formal) and each course will be served one hour apart. There will be plenty of time for people to eat their food but no one will be rushed to eat their meal. We will have dancing between meals but no one will be expected to get up and dance if they don’t want to or if they are still eating.

In my experience, plated is quicker because you don't have to wait in long lines and everyone is served at the same time. I've never had an issue with the pace before with plated meals either

This is all on your venue.

If plated, they should have enough staff to serve each table quickly. If buffet, between your DJ/emcee and the venue, they should coordinate to get the tables up and served efficiently.

We did buffet, as it worked best for our budget and vibe, but we also had ... I think 9? tables? So, it was pretty quick.

We had a buffet with 2 separate lines and guests could go on either side. So 4 open lines for the food. We had 200 guests through in about 15 minutes - it was awesome! I totally agree with you that my experience with plated dinners has been slow (not to mention the food is almost always cold). Not my favorite.

I agree that the timing completely depends on how the meal is served, which is up the coordinator/venue/caterer and some choices the hosts make. I have been to and worked at many buffet and sit down/plated/served weddings and the time varies depending on the schedule and organizational/planning efforts by the venue and hosts.

Depends on how with it the caterers are. For me, I've found that plated meals go a lot quicker.
