Plated dinner vs buffet?

I have changed my mind about our menu SO many times!!! At first my venue convinced me to do a cocktail style with heavy appetizers, but after reading these forums, I've decided that a full dinner would be a better fit. I have changed my mind about our menu SO many times!!! At first my venue convinced me to do a cocktail style with heavy appetizers, but after reading these forums, I've decided that a full dinner would be a better fit.

Now my question is - plated or buffet? My caterer is telling me a buffet is more expensive, but I never would've imagined that. A plated dinner seems a lot nicer to me, so at this point I'm thinking, isn't it obvious?? UNLESS there are unknown flaws to a plated dinner that I don't know about that you ladies can help me with!!! Tell me anything you know!

Also - does the plated dinner save time? I assume it would since people wouldn't be standing in line. However, my brother is telling me that the food will be cold by the time it's served....but what do you guys think??

We are having about 150 guests. The venue is known for FANTASTIC food.

I prefer plated. To me it seems more elegant. Many brides here love buffets so there really is no right or wrong just personal preference.

Personally I prefer plated. I have 200 guests and I can't imagine them all lining up and waiting to get their meals. I also have some older guests that wouldn't be able to get up, stand in line and wait for their food, then carry it back to their table. I also find that a plated dinner does save time. Typically the staff is quick at passing out dinner and it is much faster than everyone waiting on a buffet line.

I rarely see buffets except for small groups. Partly, I think it's because the cocktail hours here have lots of stations so a buffet style dinner would be redundant...

90% of the weddings I've attended have been plated. Buffet service is used for some of the cocktail hour food and dessert bars.
