Plated Dinner Menus

Neeva, on February 26, 2020 at 8:21 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 17

Hey guys!

So we are having a plated meal with 4 different entree options - fish, chicken, beef & vegetarian. We also have a salad which is vegetarian.

Last minute my venue told me the plan I chose actually includes an appetizer and I picked one with pork. For the vegetarians, the chef will come up with another option.

Stupid me ordered menus because minted had a coupon and it says the pork appetizer w/ all 4 entree options. I was going to put the same menu out for everyone since we are doing assigned tables, not assigned seats. We only have about 8 vegetarians but I don't want them to see a menu with a pork appetizer option only and freak out. I also have about 5 kids who will be getting none of the entree options but just getting a kid's meal which is not reflected on the menus.

Should I forget about the menus? Put out the ones I ordered and the few atypical cases won't even notice or care? Or go ahead and assign seats (not just tables)?

Thanks!!!

Could you do a special menu for those people? It is only a few so I do not think it would be a lot.

I could but where would I put them? I don't know which seat they will be sitting at since I am only assigning tables and not seats. I had planned to have menus placed at each seat in the folded napkin. I guess I could make a vegetarian table haha or I would have to assign exact seats which is a pain

I would just use the current menus and assume the vegetarians won’t make a big deal about it.

That's where I'm at too. They will be brought a vegetarian appetizer so all will end well

Well it might look a little bit tacky but since you're assigning tables why don't you place the menu with their name tags? Or just for the people with specialized menus put their menu by their name?

I am having a table in the cocktail hour area with all of the escort cards they take from there to the reception table. I would have to put menus out there which may look weird...

Lol if it seems that complex then forego the menus I say lol. I guess for me I can't visualize your plan so unfortunately I'm probably the worst one to give you the advice sorry. I'm sure it'll look fine regardless no matter what you decide.

It's okay. No matter what you choose no one will know. Anyways to put a sticker or something on the special menus that way it signifies that they are vegetarian? I stay for the little kids they just don't get a special menu or maybe the same thing put a sticker on there so the server's know that they get a kid's meal. Then again I wouldn't let the kids see the menu because then they may think they have that option.

Yeah I agree with this. Maybe if you have a wedding website put on it that vegetarian options will be provided? Or just specifically reach out to those people to let them know since it’s only a few.

I would use the ones you have, as they sound lovely. If you’re truly worried about the vegetarians, I would contact them in advance to let them know of the mix up, but that there will be vegetarian friendly options throughout the entire meal.

I would use the menu and not worry. The worse thing the vegetarians can decide they won't eat the pork appetizer, which is fine. I'd advise the caterer to explain to kids & vegetarians what their appetizer is when they deliver it.

I agree with others. I'd just use the printed menus you have and text the vegetarians individually to let them know about the mix up. I'm vegetarian myself and that alone would be more than enough! I'm just happy to have options provided for me. I don't need a special menu 😉 I wouldn't worry about getting new menus printed up if I were you 😊

I would t sweat the adult meal menus at all. When the appetizers are being served, the servers will know which tables the vegetarians are at, no? So they’ll bring over the veg app and ask who is having the vegetarian meal, and hand it to them. If they read the menu and see pork and don’t feel confident by that previous interaction, they can ask the server to double check that it is vegetarian— however they will also see visually that the other apps look different. In this case I might request that they distribute the vegetarians’ appetizers first. In fact I think it might be HELPFUL that the printed menu mentions the pork app, because then if there’s an app distribution incident where the regular app is passed out to everyone at a table even though there’s a vegetarian sat there, they can think “hmm what is this, is it veg friendly?” And consult the menu and know that it’s is not!

Re: children — if there’s a kids table, I just wouldn’t put menus . If they’re sitting dispersed amongst adults, I’d probably make a simple/cute kids’ menu, and either leave the appropriate number of them just on the table somewhere OR on place settings, and just presume when the adults select their seats , they’ll sort it out and move the kids/menus as they so choose. If you just put a couple on the table, you could do something like putting them in a decorative bucket/vase/holder and maybe p it a kid activity in there (I’m thinking like crayons and having a coloring area or prompt [ex: draw a bride and groom!], or maybe a wedding themed word search on the kids’ menu).

Truly though I wouldn’t sweat the pork-printed menus. Frankly, as someone with a severe food allergy, I like to see the standard menu to know for sure if there’s something I should NOT eat if it accidentally gets placed in front of me, even if I know I’ve already informed someone of the dietary restriction/ requested a special meal when RSVP-ing. If I sat down and read the menu and saw that I couldn’t eat the app, I’d make sure to mention it to the server — if that happened here, the servers would be sure to give that person a veg meal/ assure them their veg friendly alternative was coming.
