Plasticware - Okay for reception??

Caitlin, on January 2, 2017 at 3:16 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 18

I was wondering if anyone used nice plastic ware (plates, cutlery, cups, etc) for their reception and is this "too cheap" looking for your guests? We are trying to stay on a budget. It would be very cost effective if we provided our own dinnerwear, and I found some nice plastics sets for very cheap. I just don't want to give off a "cheap look" towards our guests.. opinions??

I was going to get glass monogram wine glasses but ended up to expensive to ship here so we are going to do plastic. No one will care as long as they have something for thier drinks to go in!

What is the vibe of your reception? For a casual BBQ reception, I think plasticware can be fine. At a fancy banquet hall, plasticware would feel out of place.

My cousin bought these silver plastic "silverware" and everyone was so surprised they were plastic when they picked them up because they looked so real! I thought it was awesome!

Does your caterer provide plates and silverware as an alternative?

As BeachDreams said, for something more casual, it will be fine; but anything fancy it would seem out of place.

Plastic is totally fine! I had the same worry and bought these cute "I Do BBQ" pouches from Etsy. Also they make really formal looking plastic ware like Kara said. We used silver looking plastic from Sam's Club. Looked great.

We were given a disposable wooden set at a wedding once and it was really cute. Depends on your wedding's vibe though.

Ali here you go! You can pick white or brown. The shop owner will customize them however you want. I personally loved the brown! They popped off the white table cloths.

I don't usually care what the utensils are as long as they're usable. Depending on what food you're serving, plasticware might break. I've had that happen at weddings before and it's a bit frustrating as a guest.

Are you doing a BBQ reception? I've seen the china like ware on a few websites. I think using plastic for a BBQ is fine, but for anything else not so much.

So we actually are doing Italian, catered through Bucca di Bepo. I know they are "laid back BBQ" style, but they also aren't too "high end" either. They are a family style restaurant. I feel like the plasticware I would provide looks better than the paperware they would provide, but the venue is a "Ballroom" setting so that is where I don't want to look "cheap" necessarily. I think I am over thinking this LOL

I thought Bucca di Bepo was an Italian restaurant.

I've been looking into Bamboo disposables - looks like wood (is wood, in fact) - biodegradable, and seems a bit more intentional than plastic. Might even be cheaper than "nice plastic" and gentler on the environment.

I don't think you are overthinking at all ... at least if you are, I did the same. I also have decided to go the plastic route, they really do make plastic wear that looks real. The guests won't notice they are plastic, they will be to worried about the food and festivities.

@Katie, I am also planning to do the bamboo biodegradable plates. I found a site that allowed us to order samples and they are great quality while also being cost effective. So much cheaper than renting and the cleanup is easier. The only thing I don't recommend (or find a place that you can order samples first) is the silverware, we did samples of the forks and knives - the texture is weird and I personally didn't like how they felt to eat with them.
