Plastic vs Glass?

Nancy, on February 4, 2018 at 10:12 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 9

Having an outdoor ceremony with indoor/outdoor reception in Texas in July in a fairly rustic space. Planning to serve fajitas or BBQ via buffet or food truck. Looks like caterers bring in plastic dishes/cutlery, which is ok, but what about glasses for water/tea etc.--is plastic ok, or should I try to find glass? We will have bar service w/bottled beer and wine served in plastic cocktail cups, I think. Trying to spend $ on the important things. Is this important?

I would at the very least make sure that you have silverware. Trying to cut BBQ with a plastic knife is the worst. I'd be weary of a plastic plate caving in when carrying plates back to your seat as well.

I’m getting married at a country club. Because the cocktail hour is outside they use plastic cups (the clear crystal looking ones) to prevent broken glass from potentially being on the lawn. It’s no biggie and I think this is pretty common. I would say dont worry about it save money on the glasses and spend money elsewhere.

Honestly, I feel like the bigger issue with your wedding is you're having an semi-outdoor wedding in Texas in July. I hope the guests get a choice to stay inside with air conditioning the whole time if they choose.

Plastic is fine. It is easy clean up and potential recyclable. That's the way we are going.

Outdoors in Texas in July while standing in line for a food truck doesn’t sound like fun. I would rethink all of this.

Im doing the faux china plastic. It's heavier and looks nicer. It comes with a silver rim on the plates. The glasses will be heavier nice cups. I don't think people will care as long as the food and drinks are good.

If you're going for a rustic feel, have you considered mason jars for water/ tea? they're fairly inexpensive! dollar tree sells them for a dollar each! and they can double as a wedding favor!

We are having 2 food trucks/ each is providing servers and cleanup people (we are paying extra for this). I am adamant about my guests not standing in line. With that said we are doing plastic for the food as well as the bartenders are bringing plastic for cups. I don't think there is anything wrong with the plastic as long as it goes with the feel of your wedding.

In terms of tact, there are so many good looking and sturdy disposable options these days, that even if you were having a sit down served meal you could get away with it. For the casual feel you've described it aligns perfectly.

When it comes down to cost, glass mason jars bought in bulk come to .86 - .93 for a wide mouthed 16 oz jar with lid. (I do canning so we're going to re purpose but without lid is cheaper still). They can really be used with any beverage even wine so they are a great cross purpose item.

With the plastic glasses you have to assume that people are going to throw them away even if you put a sign up asking them to conserve, so you'll want to order guest count x3. Average price for glass looking plastic wine glasses came to about 1.2 - 1.5 each from these two web sites were the best prices I found (I'm a spread sheet person I did the cost per glass from about 50 websites): https://www.webstaurantstore.com and https://www.poshpartysupplies.com/12-oz-renaissance-stemless-plastic-wine-goblets/. Beer and Water Glasses ran considerably cheaper.
