Plastic dinnerware for bbq?

Ashley , on May 2, 2018 at 11:40 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 12

I am having a bit of a hard time accepting that we are gonna use plastic dinnerware and drink ware at our wedding. Our venue is outside, though it is a nice venue, we are serving a barbecue buffet, and a beer and wine bar. The caterer provides really nice looking plasticware that is included, or we could have rented china through them, I feel silly serving outdoor barbecue on china, but we set the dress code at semi-formal. The plasticware also saves us $900, which is a month's rent for us. We are getting married at 22, and cut costs in some ways so we could invite everyone we love from both of our large families (200 people). Part of me worries people will think our wedding is tacky and complain that they got dressed up and are eating off plastic, and the other part of me hopes that people understand we are young, on a budget, and we are more concerned with the people surrounding us on our big day than what they are eating off of. What do you guys think?

I don't think people will care, especially if it's the nice plasticware that looks like china. I would just make sure nothing needs to be cut (especially meet) because plastic knives do not work. They should just be happy they can attend your special day!

My cousin's wedding was in a park venue- they served bbq and used plastic silverware it was completely fine. I certainly didn't think twice about it. IMO it would be odd to use china for bbq

Have you checked out eco disposables? plates made from palm leaf, bamboo, corn etc.

They are sometimes even less expensive than plastic. They also look like an intentional choice for a BBQ.

They also sell wooden cutlery and the knives work on meat!

Definitely go the money saving route for an informal meal like BBQ! I agree, I think it would be odd to have really fancy china with a less fancy meal. Nothing wrong with plastic or the alternatives that @muriel mentioned!

I wouldn't worry about it I don't think many people will think twice about it. Check out amazon they have really good deals on stuff like that! You can get really nice plates too (I think it's Chinet) that will save you money and be sturdy for BBQ. I don't think I would want to spend $900 on china for a BBQ especially if it was outside I would be worried about it breaking and someone getting hurt!

Amazon has real looking plastic ware in so many different colors and styles. Check there. And don’t worry about what other day it’s your big day and if you are satisfied and appt that’s all that matters

I am having a semi-formal wedding as well... with about 40 guest. We are on a budget as well and I decided that some things are so much more important than dinnerware. For example instead of catering, we're doing a pot luck wedding with plastic dinnerware. But the money I save in those areas I am spending on beautiful live floral arrangements, a mountain resort honeymoon and custom made wedding bands. Don't stress dinnerware, if that's all they come to see they wont be satisfied any way!

We are having food trucks, and they are all supplying their own disposable dishes and what not. I looked into renting, and like you, it becomes a really big expense. I also have looked into maybe just renting chargers, but it is STILL like 450 bucks, just to look pretty on the tables.

I think that no one will side eye you, give the low-key nature!

I wouldn't worry about it! I would not expect any fancy silverware or place settings for a BBQ. As PP have said, Amazon sells a variety of real looking plastic-ware! $900 is a lot of money to rent dishes for one day.

Girl I am right there with you. We're having a semi-formal wedding with BBQ, but ours is inside. Our caterer is Famous Dave's so they only supply paper plates and sporks...they don't do clean up of dishes and there's no venue staff to handle it, so renting china was out of the question. Plastic it is (buying on our own). It does seem a little odd on satin tablecloths, but at the same time the food is BBQ and not formal...I think you and I will be fine! Nobody is going to be like UGH MY BBQ PORK WAS SERVED ON A PLASTIC PLATE, they're going to be too busy enjoying themselves!

We're having BBQ catered at our wedding and will be using Chinet. They look like China but are half the cost.
