Recently got engaged(one week ago) we’ve decided on April 2020 and want the wedding and reception in the same venue. How soon should we start looking/book a venue?

First start with a budget and a rough guest list. Different venues have different capacities so you’ll want to know how many you’re planning on inviting. Whatever your budget is you’ll spend about 50-60% of that on venue/food/budget so make sure the venue you choose will fit into your budget.

NOW! Venues usually book a year in advance. A fews I wanted were booked and it was over a 1 year and 1/2 when I started looking.

Don’t forget to do a rough estimate of how many guests! My first venue of choice was too small by 40 guests. If I hadn’t listed it out ahead of time, I would have been super disappointed.
