Planning to lose 30 pounds before wedding, what size dress to order

Honeybee, on September 11, 2016 at 1:11 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 28

Hi everyone,

So I was overweight my whole life, until I turned 17 years old and lost 65 pounds, dropped from a size 24 to a size 8, since I carried most of my weight around my belly. I lost the weight by counting calories and working out literally 7 days a week. I managed to keep the weight off until I was 28 years old, which is when I met my fiancé. Flash forward 2 years, and now I'm 30 years old, and have gained 30 pounds in the 2 years I've been with my fiancé--all those romantic dinner dates, gah! lol

Anyway, I know that since I lost the weight before, I can lose it again. My wedding is about a year away, and I plan to lose the 30 pounds, but I'm dress shopping and getting close to finally putting a deposit on a dress. My question is, should I order a dress a couple of sizes smaller? Or should I just order a dress in my current size and then have it altered when I lose the weight? Or is that too risky?

Order your dress at its current size. I lost 20 pounds from the time I ordered my dress and wore it for my wedding. The seamstress was able to take it in.

Plus, I'd rather have my dress be too big rather than too small - you can always take a dress in but it's way harder to let a dress out.

I would talk with whoever will do your alterations. Some gowns cannot be drastically altered depending on its structure and material. So if you KNOW you'll lose the weight, you may have to order smaller to avoid not being able to alter a bigger dress. However, the pressure of having to lose weight to fit into an expensive gown might work against you. You have enough stresses with getting married, don't make gabbing to lose weight to fit into a dress one of them.

I would say order the size you are now and alter. You have a goal and I'm pretty confident that you will lose the

weight and feel good when you see the shrinkage when altering. #yougotthis

Order the size you're at now. They can always take a dress in. They can't let it out too much if your weight loss plans don't work out.

I agree with Jen- not all dresses can be dramatically altered. I am in the same boat and am dress shopping in two weeks. I'm just going to ask the seamstress how much the dress can be altered not to mention how much that costs. If they have to take the dress in 5 sizes that may cost what the dress costs. I may end up getting a smaller dress.

I would buy your current size to be safe, but also definitely talk to where you're buying the dress from! I'm sure they can give you lots of advice and I'm sure that's a super common question for them.

You have about a year. I would talk to the store you're planning to buy from and ask for a idea of how long the dress you want typically takes to come in. If it's a dress that they know usually takes 4-6 months (some do) then you've got more time to order. If they know it's a dress or designer that takes closer to 9 months they'll be able to tell you and they'll be able to address sizing.

When we measured me I was an inch larger in the bust than the size I ordered, and a half inch at the waist. I plan on losing more weight and my dress is a corset back. It will fit even if I don't lose any more weight, so they recommended the size down.

As long as you have a good store to order from, Listen to your consultants, they know what they're doing!

When is the latest date you can order the dress? I would wait until then and see how much you've lost in that time, because as Jen said, some dresses can't be altered drastically. If you can get down 10-15 pounds before ordering it would be better.

Order your current size. As a seamstress, it's always better to have the dress too big than too small. A clever seamstress can always find a way to alter a dress down.

If you do decide to order your dress smaller, ask if you can order extra yardage of matching fabric and trims, just in case.

Buy the dress in your current size. I lost almost 20lbs in the 3 months before my wedding and my seamstress took it in to fit perfectly. It's easier to take in than out.

Current size. Don't order for what might be but for what is. If anything you can get it altered closer to the wedding.

Order your current size. You don't know what can happen in a year. It is easier to take a dress in than let it out.

I would never advise someone to order a smaller size. There have been many brides on here that had planned to lose weight and they didn't.

Why not hold it off? You're getting married next Sept. You can certainly go window shopping but I'd wait until at least Spring to buy.

You can shop now, but wait until the dress actually needs to be ordered before actually getting your measurements taken. You're still a year out. Which gives you plenty of time to lose the weight BUT a lot can also happen in a year. Another good rule of thumb is that it's usually much easier to take a dress down a size (most can be taken down 2-3 sizes, depending), than it is to let it out. In fact, it's almost impossible to let a dress out, which is why it's wisest to order for the size you are at the time of measurements.

Most importantly...don't focus on the size/number on the tag of the dress--the bridal industry is a beast when it comes to sizing, BUT that is industry wide. At the end of the day, it's about how the dress makes you look and feel.

Do NOT order a size smaller! It only puts added stress on you and could cause you to channel the stress with overeating (we all do it. My vice is Cheetos and ice cream). Order your size now, and then alter it to the size you are when you get closer to the wedding.

But the above posters have a good point--some dresses lose their oomf when altered too much. Just make sure to let your consultant know so he/she can guide you and advise you!

I was told when I was ordering get my dress that there are 2 inch five in either side.. There is wiggle room up to 40 lbs gain or loss before the dress looses its structure.
