Plane tickets and Passports

Ingrid, on January 25, 2020 at 5:01 PM Posted in Planning 0 12
So, I've never flown out of the country before but we chose to get married in Jamaica. Our goal was to have everything paid off months in advance which we've done. However, my travel agent quoted us airfare pricing and we agreed to purchase them. Now, she's telling me that we cant complete the purchase without passport numbers. Why wouldn't that have been explained before now? We hadn't planned on starting to passport process until next month for our October wedding. Im so pissed!!!!

That’s weird. I’ve booked international flights before and have never needed a passport number to book.

I've never needed my passport number to book. Have you tried just booking the tickets yourself? (Go through the process to the point of traveller information, just to see what it says?) Or ask her why she needs your passport number?

You can get it expedited on travel.gov. Well the bright side is you’ll have your passport way in advance.

I travel a lot internationally and it depends on the airline or tour operators. They can change policies as well, so I wouldn’t get too upset at the agent. People make mistakes.

I've needed my passport number to book most if not all of my international flights. Honestly, I never thought anything of it. Sure, the travel agent probably should've given you a heads up, but I can see how that can be something they didn't think about. Did they know you don't have passports yet?

It is different when a travel agent does it for you. I only know because I have taken students internationally but some airline tickets will ask for passport numbers. Depends on the airline but I think it is when the travel agent does it for you. I would buy the tickets yourself.

I’ve had to provide my passport information for international flights. You shouldn’t be mad at the travel agent cause it’s quite typical to need that information before booking.

My issue is that she knew we're never flown out the country and as a travel agent hired, all the information should be given upfront. She travels out of the country monthly and would know that detail. She should've informed me of this over 2 years ago when I hired her. This is another oversight to add to the list of many, and that's what's frustrating besides the fact it takes a number of days for her to respond or take payments.

Have you tired booking the flights yourself ? I’ve flown to Mexico many times and it never asks me for passport number. I guess it’s just depends on the airline. But that is bad on her side for not letting you know you need your passports in order to book your flights.

I booked our honeymoon flights to jamaica without it (cuz FH needed to get his updated). We will just need them when checking in for the flight. I booked with United. Talk to your travel agent to see if there are any options. Or just go out soon to get the passport applied for so you can order flights as soon as it comes in.

We actually purchased our own airline tickets, it seems she was going through a 3rd party. We were able to get the tickets at a cheaper price than what she was offering. So we're still on our timeline, which I'm grateful for.

We had this panic too when buying tickets for our honeymoon. We wanted to get the plane tickets before prices started going up but don't have our passports yet.

It sounds like you were able to work it out but for anyone else who runs into this problem, what you can try doing (and that we did) is when it asked for Passport number just enter a bunch of zeros. Then once you have your passport contact the airline to update the information.
