Plane tickets and name change

Molly, on May 24, 2017 at 12:04 PM Posted in Planning 1 16

Has anyone purchased a plane ticket in advance with their new name before getting it changed? We are planning a trip for the fall and want to buy our tickets but we aren't getting married until late July. I'm wondering what other people have done for this or if they kept their maiden name until after the trip.

Your name has to match your boarding pass - especially if you're flying overseas.

Can you book flights with a different last name? I'm not sure if that is possible.

Thanks to google - I know you can change the name on a ticket after its purchased if you have a name change or correction

Or wait until after you travel

It is just a domestic flight so I don't have to worry about my passport thankfully. I also saw that I could change it with a name correction, but wasn't sure if anyone else had any experience with this. Thanks!

Some airlines will charge you for a name correction. If you plan to change your name immediately and you don't need a passport, you should be fine booking it in your new name.

Just buy the tickets under your new name.

Depending on how late in the fall, I would not change your name until after travel. It can be timely as you are waiting on other branches of government to do their job and they can be slow. Do not think that it will be timely even if someone tells you it might be. It took me a long time to change mine back to my maiden after my divorce several years ago. It is not a fun process.

I will not even bother with mine until sometime after. Once I change it with work I get to twiddle my thumbs for a week without access to do my job.

I bought a ticket for my mom with her married last name. She has been divorced for a long time but had never changed her name back. 2 days before we are leaving she told me she changed her name back to her maiden name. I called the airline and they said you can not change the name on the ticket less than 3 days in advance but told me that if she brought her ID, divorce certificate and birth certificate she would be fine. We had zero problems getting through security both in Tampa and D.C. The airline was Southwest. Thanks mom!

Your boarding pass has to match your ID. So unless you plan on getting your name changed immediately with the DMV and SS office than I would suggest keeping your maiden name until after the trip.

Not for a flight, but I changed it for the cruise. I put my married name down and obviously haven't changed it yet since we aren't married. We aren't going on our honeymoon until 7 months after the wedding so I have plenty of time to change my name including on my passport

We are honeymooning in early September and traveling internationally. I am not changing my name until after we get back. My cousin worked for AA for 40 years and he recommended that.

I'm just going to wait to change my name legally to be safe. I'm going to start going by that name, but won't officially change it until after the honeymoon

Buy your ticket with whatever your name will be at the time you fly to avoid issues.

It depends on how long it takes for you to get your marriage license back and how long the name change process will be.

We booked the tickets under my current name because I will not even be able to change my name in the three weeks between wedding and honeymoon.

If you end up booking your flights under your current name and changing your name in the interim but not your passport, you CAN use your passport as ID for domestic flights, and that would have your previous name.

I would just keep your name until after the honeymoon and book tickets under your current name. You can change a name on a flight later, but it will cost more money and potentially proof that you may not have.

Check with the airline. I think you can book with your maiden name and take your marriage certificate with you. That's how it works in South Africa anyway.

We left for our honeymoon the day after the wedding, so I obviously used my maiden name. I wasn't any less married. Smiley winking

Times and policies certainly can vary by location, and I wouldn't risk anything too close, but I was able to change mine all in one day by going to the Social Security office with my marriage license and then to the DMV with the paperwork I got from the SS office. Our honeymoon lasted a week, and the marriage license was there waiting on us when we got back home, so it didn't take a long time either.

I used my maiden name on my airline tix/reservations. I'm not changing it until we get back. We're also leaving 2 days after the wedding so there won't be enough time to change it anyway.
