Placemats--DIY or Skip?

Opalite, on July 25, 2017 at 8:37 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 14

I'm a crafty person. I like to sew, crochet, and cross stitch. I recently got the idea in my head that we will need placemats on the tables, so I started looking into making burlap and lace placemats for 90 people. As I type this, I think it's ridiculous, but I also still think it would be a nice touch. I would only sew lace on the two short edges of the placemat and would buy burlap that is 12 inches wide, so I'd only have to make one cut per placemat. I attached an example photo to give you an idea of what I'm going for.

Long story short, is it worth it to make all these? Should I skip them? I just don't want to get myself into something and then halfway through, realize that no one will notice them besides me, and abandon the project.

Thanks for replying smox and Sarah. There will be white tablecloths, but the plates won't be on the table--we're having a buffet, and the plates will be stacked at the head of the buffet. That led to me thinking the place settings will look "empty" with just a napkin and cutlery. But maybe I'm just overthinking it and need someone to calm me down! :-)

Assuming you have a tablecloth, skip this.

Thanks all, you have talked me off of the crafting ledge. And just saved me about $100 and many hours of my summer vacation. :-)

Depending on your table, but I don't think I ever attended a wedding with placemats.

There is either a table cloth or it's just a nice plain wood table.

You could consider chargers instead ...

Maybe a compromise would be crafting some table runners? But I think it will be totally fine to just have napkins on each place setting, that's pretty common, I've never had a placemat for a wedding so I wouldn't worry about your guests expecting to see them.

I would opt for chargers instead. making the placemats would get pretty time consuming.

I would say skip. That is a lot of work and place mats are not usually necessary if there will be a table cloth.

Chargers for a buffet doesn't make sense since there are no servers to clear them. Even if there's no buffet the plate isn't there until you're served food.

I think this is such a neat & cute idea!! It's really your decision. I would love to get chargers for mine but am trying to find the best deal...the search has not been successful Smiley sad It is what it is.

Thanks for your input everybody! I'm skipping the placemats and I'm also skipping the chargers, since we're using eco-friendly and attractive disposable plates made out of palm leaves. I think keeping it simple will keep me and my day-of coordinator sane. It's a very DIY venue, so I'll focus on the escort cards and centerpieces.
