Place Settings for Reception

Lacy, on August 21, 2010 at 1:03 AM Posted in Planning 0 6

I drew up a table design for the reception. I'm just curious about a few things:

1) How much room should each guest have on a table for their place setting when using a) 10 people per 8' table or b) 8 people per 60" round table?

2) Per 8' table or 60" round table, how many salt/pepper shaker sets should there be on each?

I'm going to redraw my design but I want it to be as accurate as possible as far as spacing and quantities goes. I'm trying to create a visual of what it will all look like.

P.S. The drawing is on paper and not on the computer, which is why I didn't attach a photo.

I'm not sure about the first one. I wanted to make sure my guest had decent room, so I only put 8 per table. But you only need 1 salt and pepper shaker per table.

We are putting one person on each end as well, so that makes 10 for us. I've seen them with and without people on the end and I want to utilize as much space as possible.

I hope I'm reading the first section correctly. The 8 guests seated at the 60 inch round will have more room than the 10 guests seated at the 8 foot long. If I had to guestimate the space of the average formal place setting (including bread and butter, wine and water), I'd allow for 20 inches per guest -- especially since the average plate charger is 12-14 inches.

I definitely suggest having two sets of shakers per 60 inch round if they are available (from venue) or if you have room in your budget for them. While it's true it may seem like an unnecessary ''extra'', I've been to many receptions and waiting around for one set to be passed from person to person (or having to interrupt a conversation just to get the shakers passed) just seems even MORE unnecessary, especially when it's not that big of a deal to get two sets.

Well we aren't sure if we are going to do round tables or rectangular tables which is why I wanted an estimate for both. If we do round, there will be 8 people per table. If we do 8' tables, there will be 10 people per table. We aren't doing charger plates, just a dinner plate with 2 forks, a knife, and a spoon, and one glass (no alcohol at the reception). There also won't be bread or butter on the table.

Is that 20 sq. inches? That actually sounds like what I figured up.

Well I just assumed the MOST amount of items at a place setting -- which would include a charger, bread and butter, wine and water... and since the charger is the largest element at 12-14 inches... that gives roughly 5 or so inches for movement.

I think if you go with 20 inches, it will give you a solid number to play with. You could also possibly visit a rental supply company and get a more accurate measurement. I assume they would have a full place setting on display.

Yes, I will be going to a rental company at the beginning of next month with FMIL to discuss everything. I hadn't thought about their displays. Thanks!
