Pizza for the Reception Dinner??

Samantha, on March 7, 2019 at 1:11 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 39
Our wedding isn't until Nov of 2020, so we have plenty of time to either elaborate on this idea or to scrap it and think of another, but here it is:

We're having an informal outdoor wedding with a reception (6-9pm) at the same venue. We're anticipating between 75-100 guests. We want to skip serving plated meals as this can get pretty pricey and we do not have a huge budget, so we've decided that serve-yourself/buffet style is the way to go. BUT, even hiring a caterer to provide and staff a serve yourself buffet is going to run us well over $1k! I know that this is about average, but I'm wanting to explore even cheaper options (if those exist).

Thats where my (possibly amazing, possibly horrible) idea comes in: pizza, wings, breadsticks, and a snack bar as our reception food. As in, we order a TON of pizza and sides from a local Pizza Hut and pay the delivery drivers handsomely to help us set it all out just before the reception. Also, we would have a huge snack bar with chips and such to the side, beside the drink buckets.

I priced it all out and after paying for the food, delivery fee, plates and napkins, and matching the cost of the aforementioned items in tips for delivery drivers, we would only be spending around $800 total.

Is this a trashy idea??? Or kinda fun? How could i improve the implementation of this idea? Please help me decide!

I should also mention that there will be a smores and hot chocolate bar as well for after dinner, so guests will have more to graze on than just pizza and sides.

I think the only way pizza can be done well at a wedding is if you have an on-site pizza oven or a food truck. Delivery pizzas sitting out will get cold and soggy in normal circumstances, I can’t even imagine what being outside in winter will be like. Venue/food/alcohol are the most expensive parts of a wedding and those 3 things usually take up 50-60% of your overall budget. If you need cheap catering ideas look into your local bbq/Mexican/Italian restaurants.

I think this only works if your wedding is SUPER casual. I think you would still need heat lamps and food warmers or else the pizza is going to get cold. I would also look at local places rather than chains, as that fills slightly classier.

But it I do echo what Kelly said, a self serve buffet from bbq/Mexican/Italian works better for a wedding.

How will you keep the pizza warm? Or anything served cold, cold? Even if you offer to pay the pizza delivery person, he may not have time to help you set up, he is on the clock so he can't take 30+ minutes helping deliver. If you can't afford $10 per person at least for catering, I just wouldn't serve food at have your wedding during a nonmeal time or cut your guest list.

That's what I'm worried about. I really want our guests to enjoy their time at our reception and I don't want them to have to suffer through cold food, lol. I do actually know someone who owns a pizza food truck, but have no idea about her rates. Maybe I should inquire with her. I did look into a few "cheap" restaurants (local Italian and mexican places) near us and they are all still very expensive when it comes to catering, unfortunately. It's starting to look like we may just have to suck it up and pay out the wazoo for catering 😔

    Thank you for the feedback!

So I'll start off by saying we totally considered having a pizza bar/buffet at our wedding, but sadly (I'm still sad about it!) it didn't work out because it was a local guy (not an actual catering company) and his insurance only allowed him to do pizza and I couldn't find anybody to co-cater with him to do appetizers, salads and pastas Smiley sad We ended up going with someone who is going to do food stations for us: tacos, pasta, sliders, etc.

So while I do think pizza can be a fun idea for a more casual reception, I wouldn't do it through a chain pizza place like pizza hut. I'm just thinking of presentation...I wouldn't want pizza hut pizza boxes at my wedding, but that's just me. What we were using was a food truck and the presentation was nice where they had metal stands they set the pizzas on.

You're going to get a lot of people on here saying that if you can't afford food for your guests then cut down your guest list. $1,000 for 100 people is $10 per person which is not at all bad and pretty much the lowest you are going to get no matter your location. BBQ & Pastas are usually your least expensive catering items. Have you checked into Olive Garden catering? I've heard good reviews of that being used. What about a local BBQ place? I know the company we are using for our reherseal dinner catering does a bbq meat & 2 sides for $9.50 a person and that is with them coming to setup and clean up.

Here is what our pizza bar was going to look like:

As I mentioned to Kelly, i do actually know someone who has a food truck. I would have to inquire about pricing, but maybe that's an option to keep the food warm/fresh? Can't believe i didnt think of that before.

We can't do bbq because we need basically a vegetarian menu and mexican/Italian still seems to cost more than we are really wanting to spend, but it's looking like we may not have many other options.

    Thank you for the suggestions!

What is your budget for catering and how many guests? I’ve never heard of catering for under $10 per person so if you are looking for something cheaper than that I would cut your guest list or host something at a non meal time.

I totally understand weddings can get expensive but $1000 for 100 people is not "out the wazoo". That's $10/person and that's almost what a typical fast food meal can cost, let alone having people who are delivering the food, setting up and cleaning up.

Wow that display looks great! Sorry you couldn't do pizza for your wedding. I'm thinking we're probably going to scrap it for ours too since there are a lot of flaws with it that I didn't consider 😔 UNLESS we can make a pizza food truck that a friend of mine owns work at ours. Believe it or not, the guest list only contains family and very close friends as it is (we both have rather large families) so cutting it isn't really an option. We may just have to cut costs in other areas to pay for better catering instead. We have considered olive garden but they charge a huge delivery fee in our area (the wedding is kind of in the middle of BFE). May be worth it to reconsider them if pizza doesn't work, though.

    Thank you!

Hopefully your contact can be close to your budget for the pizza truck! We were quoted $1,500 for 200 people w/ an $800 minimum though regardless of the number of the people.

Holy moly, $1500 for 200 people is pretty great. A lot of places I've spoken to want that much for our 100 or less guests 😔 we do live in an area where a lot of weddings are held (as in, people travel to have weddings here), though, so maybe caterers charge more here because there's a huge demand? I'm not sure how that works. Either way, it sounds like you got an awesome rate. Congrats!

If budget is such a concern, and you must invite 75-100 guests, why not a 2 pm backyard reception followed by a cake & punch reception? Totally ok to offer that at a non-meal time.

PS Does you house have enough (3+ probably) bathrooms? Renting port-a-potties will add to your cost.

$1500 for200 people is GREAT!! But $1500 for 100 people isn't bad either. You have well over a year to pay for it. Also, if your friend has a food truck why not hire him to do the food. I am on a budget myself, but sometimes you will end up spending more money and time trying to cut too many corners. Start shopping around. You have plenty of time. But if you can find catering for 100 people for $**** that's great! if you're trying to spend less than that you may just want to have it at a non meal time and do a cake and punch reception. Good Luck

We actually rent a small 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom apartment so no yard space at all and definitely not enough bathroom access for all of our guests Smiley sad if we had a house with a yard, my first choice would be a backyard wedding to cut costs . However, since we don't have that option, we have found a local venue we love that provides plenty of space and bathrooms for everyone, so thankfully no porta-john rentals will be needed. I have the entire wedding planned from 5pm-9pm right now (ceremony from 5-6, cocktail hour from 6-6:30, and reception from 6:30-9), but maybe moving it up a little earlier in the day would be a good option if I can't make cheap catering work. Like you said, a cake and punch reception.

    Thanks for the advice!

I'm going to ask my friend about catering. She may offer me a good deal! We can spend up to $1500 for catering; I'm just trying to do it in the cheapest way possible while still offering our guests the best quality possible. Catering may be one thing we just can't cut corners on, though, like you said. I have found so far that there are a few areas that are worth it to pay a little more for better quality in: the venue, photographer, DJ, and dresses/suits. At least in my (limited) experience with wedding planning thus far. I'm thinking I might just have to add the food to that list, as much as I would like to save money.

    Thanks for the feedback!

Sorry! I thought you were having it in your backyard. Good idea not too (rentals = add up, including bathrooms).

How cool!! If you don't mind me asking, how much is it going to cost you to have a food truck cater? Will your guests pay for their meals or do you pay one fee for everyone to be served?
